The short answer
A glass table top usually cracks from a knock at its edge. Heat from a hot dish or an uneven base can also crack it. A crack cannot be repaired, so we make a new top to size. For most tables we suggest toughened glass, the safety glass that breaks into small blunt pieces.

- A crack runs in from one edge or corner. You may see a small chip where it began. A glass top takes knocks worst at its edges.
- What we do
- We measure the table and make a new top to size. Its edges are polished smooth or bevelled, which means cut at an angle. Both are safe to touch.

- How to tell
- A wandering crack appeared after a hot dish, a heater or cold water. There was no knock. Plain glass, which is not toughened, can crack this way.
- What we do
- We make the new top in toughened glass, which takes heat better. We choose a thickness that suits the size of the table.

- How to tell
- The crack starts over a leg, a bracket or a support. The top may have rocked slightly before it cracked. A hard point under the glass puts the weight in one spot.
- What we do
- We look at how the base carries the glass while we measure. If the base itself is uneven, we tell you. Repairing furniture is carpentry or welding, which we do not do.

- How to tell
- The crack runs across the middle, not from an edge. The top may have bent slightly when someone leaned on it. Thin glass on a wide table flexes with daily use.
- What we do

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Look where the crack starts: at an edge, in the middle, or over a leg.
- Think back to a knock, a hot dish or a heater near the table.
- Look for a small stamp in one corner of the glass, which usually means it is toughened.
- Measure the top and photograph the base, without lifting or pressing the glass.
Stop using a cracked table top. Take things off it gently, and do not lean on it or put anything hot on it. Keep children away, because a cracked top can break without warning.

Can a crack in a glass table top be filled or glued?
No. A filler may hide a crack, but the glass stays weak along that line. It can break later under weight or heat. On a table people eat at and lean on, a new top is the safe choice.
Should my new table top be toughened glass or plain glass?
For most tables, toughened. It is much stronger against knocks, and it breaks into small blunt pieces if it ever breaks. It must be cut and shaped before it is toughened, so the size is settled first. We suggest a glass and explain why, and the choice is yours.
Can you make a round or oddly shaped glass table top?
Yes. We cut tops to shape and finish the edges so they are smooth to touch. For a hard shape, we make a template, a full-size pattern of the top. A curved top costs more to make than a plain rectangle.
Do you measure for a new table top at my home?
Yes. We measure the table where it stands, and look at how the base holds the glass. A photo and rough sizes before the visit help us plan.
