A stiff sliding door usually has worn or seized rollers, the small wheels it runs on. Other causes are a rough or dented track, or a door dropped at one end. Most doors slide well again after one visit, and no new door is needed.

- The door feels heavy along its whole run, and you may need both hands. You hear a scrape or a grind as it moves. A door left shut for weeks may thump when it starts.
- What we do
- We take the door out and fit new rollers rated for its weight. We check the track on the same visit, because a rough track wears new rollers quickly.

- How to tell
- The track is the groove or rail the rollers run along. The door moves easily in most places but goes heavy at one or two spots. You feel a catch or a rumble at the same place each time.
- What we do
- We file the rough patches smooth, ease the dent up and clean the groove out. We replace a short length of track only when filing cannot save it.

- How to tell
- The door rubs the frame or the floor near one end. Seen from inside, the closed door sits at a slight slope in its frame. It is often hardest to push just before it closes.
- What we do
- Most aluminium sliders have a height setting at each roller. We raise the low end and reset the top guide, the part that keeps the door upright. This setting work is part of the repair visit.

- How to tell
- The keeper is the part on the frame that the lock hook goes into. The door will not start moving until you work the handle again. Once it is moving, it slides easily.
- What we do
- We check the door height first, since a dropped door also drags its lock. If the lock has worn, we fit a new one in the same cutout and set the keeper.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Clear loose dust from the track with a vacuum or soft brush, then slide the door again.
- Slide the door slowly end to end, and notice if it is heavy everywhere or at one spot.
- Listen as it moves, because a steady scrape points to the rollers.
- Turn the handle fully open before you slide, and see if the door starts more easily.
- Do not oil the track, because oil holds dust and makes the door heavier.

Should I put grease on a stiff sliding door track?
No. Grease and oil catch dust, and the grit then grinds the track and the rollers. The door feels lighter for a short time, then gets worse. A clean, dry track is what a sliding door needs.
Why does my sliding door get stiffer every monsoon?
Rain washes dust into the bottom track. Drain slots are small slots at the bottom of the frame that let water out. When they block, water stands in the track. Standing water rusts the rollers, and a rusty roller turns stiffly.
Can pushing a stiff sliding door hard cause more damage?
Yes, over time. A roller that no longer turns is dragged along the track and wears a groove into it. Pulling hard can also loosen the handle and the lock. Fixing it early can mean new rollers alone, with no track work.
Does a heavy sliding door need both new rollers and a new track?
Rarely both. Worn rollers are the usual cause, and light track wear is filed smooth on that visit. A new length of track is only for damage that filing cannot remove. We show you the track before we suggest it.
