A glass door hangs on two hinges. In a bathroom they sit in steam and water all day. In an office they take a swing every few minutes. Over time they rust, come loose, or let the door drop so it grinds on the fixed panel or the floor. We replace them with hinges that match the holes in your glass, in the same finish, and set the door straight again. Prices start at ₹2,600 a pair, supplied and fitted.
The three kinds of hinge we replace
A wall-to-glass hinge fixes to the wall or the tiles on one side, and clamps the glass on the other. Most shower doors that open off a wall use two of these.
A glass-to-glass hinge joins the door to a fixed glass panel. It comes in three angles: straight, 90 degrees for a corner, and 135 degrees for an angled enclosure. Which one you have depends on the shape of your shower.
A pivot hinge sits at the top and bottom of the door instead of at the side. Some office doors and some tall shower doors are hung this way.
We carry the common sizes of all three on the van, in chrome. Black and other finishes we order, usually within a few working days.
Why the holes in the glass decide what we can fit
Toughened glass cannot be drilled after it is made. So the holes for the hinges are fixed the day the door was cut. A new hinge has to match those holes, both in size and in the distance between them.
Most hinges sold in India follow a few standard patterns, and we match to those. This is why we ask for a photo of the hinge with a tape measure across it before we come. It tells us which hinge to bring.
Where the old hinge is an unusual pattern that nobody makes any more, we tell you honestly. Sometimes a different hinge can be made to fit with a spacer plate. Sometimes the right answer is a new door leaf, and we say that rather than force a hinge that will not hold.
What the visit looks like
We support the door first. It comes off the old hinges and is set aside on a soft pad.
We remove the old hinges from the wall or the fixed panel. If the old fixings have rusted into tiles, we take them out carefully so the tile does not crack. Then we clean the glass around the holes. Old gasket and silicone come off.
The new hinges go on with fresh rubber gaskets between the metal and the glass. That gasket is what stops the hinge cracking the glass, so we never reuse an old one.
We hang the door, level it, and check the gap along the closing edge. On a shower door we make sure the seal strip meets the fixed panel evenly, because that is what keeps the water in. The whole job usually takes an hour or two.
What decides the price
A pair of wall-to-glass hinges, supplied and fitted, starts at ₹2,600. A pair of glass-to-glass hinges is ₹3,600, because the hinge itself costs more. Both prices include the gaskets, the visit and the setting.
A black finish costs a little more than chrome. If the seal strip along the door edge has gone hard, we replace it at the same time for ₹950, and we tell you before we do.
If the door has only dropped because the fixings have worked loose, and the hinges themselves are sound, we tighten and reset them and charge for the visit. We do not sell you hinges you do not need.
