The short answer
A glass door that rubs on the floor has usually tilted on its fittings. It can also sink on a worn floor spring or a worn hinge. A tilted door usually needs setting, with no new part. Either way, it is worth fixing before the corner of the glass chips.

- The door scrapes for part of its swing, then runs clear. The gap above the door is wider at one end than the other.
- What we do
- A frameless door is held at its corners by patch fittings, which are small metal plates. We loosen them, bring the door back to square a little at a time, and fix them again.

- How to tell
- A floor spring is the closer that sits in the floor below the door. When the pivot inside it wears, the whole door sits lower. The door then scrapes along its full path, not just one part.
- What we do
- Setting the door will not hold on a worn floor spring. We lift the door off, fit a new unit in the floor box and rehang it level.

- How to tell
- This happens on doors hung on hinges from a wall or a fixed glass panel. The corner furthest from the hinges catches the floor first. The door may also brush the panel beside it.
- What we do
- If the hinges are sound and only loose, we tighten and reset them. If they have worn, we fit a new pair to the holes already in the glass.

- How to tell
- The door has dropped, but it still closes at a steady pace and the floor stays dry. That points to the fitting that grips the bottom of the glass, not the floor spring.
- What we do
- A glass door repair visit covers every fitting, from the top pivot down. We reset the bottom fitting and renew the rubber inside any fitting we open. A worn part is shown to you and priced first.

What you can check first

- Look at the scratch on the floor and see if it covers the whole swing or only part.
- Compare the gap above the door at both ends to see if one end is wider.
- Check whether the floor has lifted, or a mat or new flooring now sits under the door.
- Let the door close on its own and see whether it also slams, drifts or stops short.
- Look at the bottom corner of the glass for any chip where it has been rubbing.
If the bottom corner of the glass has a chip, stop using the door. Keep people back from it. Toughened glass with a damaged corner can break without warning.

How can I tell whether the door has dropped or the floor has risen?
Look at the gap above the door. If that gap has grown, the door has dropped. If the top gap is unchanged but the door still scrapes, something under it has come up. A new floor, a lifted stone or a thick mat is the usual reason.
What can be done if a new floor is now too high for the door?
Toughened glass cannot be cut shorter once it is made. There is some room for adjustment in the fittings, and we check whether it is enough. If it is not, we explain your choices on the visit. Lowering or relaying the floor is flooring work, which we do not do.
Will the scratch marks on the floor disappear once the door is fixed?
No, but a door that swings clear stops adding new ones. The old marks stay until the floor itself is treated. Removing scratches from stone or marble is floor polishing, which is not work we do. A floor polishing service can handle it once the door is set.
