The short answer
Glass doors have a small gap so they can swing, filled by a rubber strip. A gap you can see light through usually means that strip has hardened or fallen off. If the gap is wider at one end, a door has tilted or a hinge has worn. All three are usually done in one visit.

- Light and air come through a straight gap along the full height. The clear strip on the meeting edges is yellow, brittle or missing in places.
- What we do
- We remove what is left, clean the edges and fit new rubber cut to full height. On a pair of doors, one strip covers the line where the two edges meet.

- How to tell
- The gap is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, or the reverse. The top edges of the two doors no longer sit level with each other.
- What we do
- We set each door square in its fittings until the meeting edges run parallel. New rubber on a crooked door gets crushed at one end. So we set the doors before the strip goes on.

- How to tell
- On doors hung on hinges, one door now sits lower than its partner. The gap may have opened slowly, and the doors may catch each other as they close.
- What we do
- We fit new hinges to the holes already in the glass, with new gaskets. A gasket is the rubber pad between the metal and the glass. Then we hang the door level with its partner.

- How to tell
- A strip is there, but it sits crooked, slips along the edge or keeps falling off. It may have been replaced before with a strip made for other glass.
- What we do

What you can check first

- Look at the gap from top to bottom and note whether it stays the same width.
- Stand back and see whether the top edges of the two doors sit level.
- After dark, shine a phone torch along the gap and see where light comes through.
- Press the clear strip lightly with a fingernail to see if it is still soft.
- Listen for glass tapping on glass as the doors close.

Is a small gap between two glass doors normal?
Yes. The doors need a little space so they can swing without touching. A rubber strip usually fills that space. Light or air coming through means the strip has gone or a door has moved.
Can a thicker strip close a gap that has grown wider?
Only a little. Strips are made to fill the normal gap, not to hide a door that has moved. A thick strip squeezed into a crooked gap gets crushed and falls away. We set the door first, then fit the strip that suits it.
Does an open gap between the doors affect the air conditioning?
It does. Cool air slips out through the gap, and dust and street noise come in. A new strip closes that path at the doors. Leaks around windows or walls are separate from this job.
