The short answer
A glass door that will not lock usually has a worn or broken lock. The other common cause is a door that has dropped a little, so the bolt misses its hole. A worn lock is replaced in the same cutout, and a dropped door is set square. Either is usually done in one visit.

- The key has grown stiffer over the weeks, and now it will not turn all the way. It may feel gritty even with the door open.
- What we do
- The lock on a frameless door is usually a patch lock, a small metal box on its corner. We fit a new one in the same cutout and hand over new keys.

- How to tell
- The key turns, but the bolt does not move. The door may be stuck open, or stuck locked with nobody able to get in.
- What we do
- A lock that has broken inside is changed, not mended. A door stuck locked can usually be opened without harming the glass. Then we fit the new lock.

- How to tell
- The bolt comes out, but it lands beside its hole or hits the edge of the keeper. A keeper is the metal plate the bolt slides into. With the door open, the key turns easily.

- Here the lock is healthy, and the door needs setting. We set the door square until the bolt drops straight into its hole.

- The bolt goes in, but the door still rattles and does not feel secure. The hole may be packed with dirt, or its edges may be worn or broken.

What you can check first

- With the door open, turn the key and watch whether the bolt comes out at all.
- Close the door gently and look at where the bolt sits against its hole.
- Look into the bolt hole in the floor, and clear any loose dirt from it with a vacuum.
- Do not spray oil into a stiff lock, and tell us the key has gone stiff instead.

Why does the key turn easily with the door open but not when it is closed?
Because the bolt is pressing against the edge of its hole. With the door open, nothing is in its way. That points to a door that has dropped, not a worn lock. Setting the door square usually cures it.
A key has gone missing. Should the glass door lock be changed?
If someone else could use that key, yes. A new lock comes with its own keys, so the lost one no longer opens the door. It fits the same cutout, and the glass is not touched.
Does the door have to come off to change a glass door lock?
No. The lock comes off the corner while the door stays hanging. Setting a dropped door so the bolt meets its hole is also done with the door in place. Lifting a door off is only needed for jobs like a new floor spring.
