What a bathroom glass door is, and what comes with it
In India the glass door on a shower is usually called a bathroom glass door. Some people say washroom glass door or toilet glass door. It is the same thing: a door of toughened glass that keeps the shower water on the shower side.
The door rarely stands alone. It usually hangs beside a fixed glass panel, and the two together are the bathroom glass partition. So a price for the door is a price for the whole run of glass, with its fittings and seals.
Toughened glass is safety glass. If it ever breaks, it breaks into small blunt pieces. Every door on this page is made from it.
Hinged, sliding, pivot or double: how each door opens
A hinged door swings outward, into the dry half of the bathroom. It is the simplest door and the one most homes have. It needs clear floor in front of it for the swing.
A sliding door moves sideways across the fixed panel. Nothing swings, so it suits a small bathroom. The track is at the top, and there is no rail on the floor to collect water.
A pivot door turns on a pin at the top and the bottom. It can open both ways, and it suits a wide opening.
A double door is two narrow doors that open from the middle. Each one swings only half as far as one wide door would.
A framed door sits inside a slim aluminium frame. Choose it when the wall is out of straight, or when you like the look of a frame.
If you want no door at all, a fixed glass panel also keeps the dry side dry. That one is on our bathroom glass partitions page, with the corner enclosures.
Bathroom glass door size and glass thickness
There is no standard size. Every door is cut to the opening we measure in your bathroom. We measure after the tiling is finished, because the glass is made to the finished tile face.
The width depends on two things. The gap must be wide enough to step through. And a door that swings must clear the basin, the toilet and the room door.
Most doors are 10mm toughened glass. A door of that thickness is heavy, so the wall behind the hinges has to be solid. We check the wall when we measure, and we tell you before you order if it will not hold.
The fittings on a glass door, and the finish you can choose
A hinged door has a pair of hinges, a knob or handle, and clear seal strips on its edges. A sliding door has rollers on a top track, a pull handle and a seal along the bottom.
Chrome fittings are standard and are included in the rate. Black and gold fittings cost more for each piece. Tell us when we measure if you want a finish other than chrome.
Fittings are the parts that wear. Steam and hard water reach them every day. Each one can be changed later on the same glass, so a worn hinge never means a new door.
When the door you have needs a part, not a new door
Most calls about a bathroom glass door are not for a new one. The door has dropped at one corner. It scrapes, or it swings back open. Water gets past it onto the dry floor. A sliding door is heavy to push.
The glass is almost never the cause. A hinge has worn, a seal has gone hard, or a roller has worn flat. Each of those parts has one fixed price, supplied and fitted. The prices are in the second table on this page.
If you cannot tell which part it is, book the repair visit. We check the whole door in order and change only the part that has failed. A cracked or chipped door is different. Toughened glass cannot be patched, so that door is measured and made new.
What a bathroom glass door price covers
A new door is priced per square foot of glass. The rate covers the glass, the fittings, the seals and the fitting work. GST is added to it. You pay for the area of the whole run, the door and the fixed panel together.
Three things move the total. The size of the opening comes first. The kind of door comes next: a sliding set costs more than a pair of hinges. The finish of the fittings is the third.
A small bathroom often has a higher rate per square foot. The hinges and handle cost the same on a small door as on a large one. The written price lists the glass, the fittings and the fitting work on separate lines.
