Soap scale and shower rollers
Every shower coats its enclosure in a fine mist of soap and minerals. On the glass you see it as a white haze. On the rail above the door, which few people clean, it builds into a crust.
The rollers run through that crust every day. It works into the bearings, and a stiff wheel stops rolling and starts to skid. A skidding wheel wears flat on one side, and a flat wheel makes the door drag.
Bathroom rollers also rust in a way bedroom door rollers do not. For shower doors we fit rollers with sealed stainless bearings and plastic wheels that resist scale.
Why a shower slider jumps off its rail
Most hanging shower doors have small anti-jump blocks above the rollers. They stop the door leaving the rail when someone pulls too hard, or a wheel hits a lump of scale.
On older doors these blocks can be broken or missing. Then a firm pull can lift a worn roller straight off the rail. A heavy glass door coming off its track in a wet bathroom is dangerous. That is why we treat a jumping shower door as urgent.
When we change rollers, we refit or replace the anti-jump blocks. We also set the bottom guides so the door cannot swing out at the base.
What the visit involves
We lift the door off the rail and rest it on a pad against the wall. Shower doors are lighter than room sliders but slippery, so this is careful two-handed work.
We scrape and clean the rail back to bare metal, because new rollers on a scaled rail wear out like the old ones. The bottom guide channel gets the same cleaning, and we clear its drain path so water does not pool there.
The new rollers go onto the door, and we set their height so the door hangs level. The door goes back with the anti-jump blocks in place. We slide it many times, then set the closing line so it meets the seal strip square.
Cost, and the sign to act early
A pair of shower door rollers, fitted, starts at ₹1,360. That includes cleaning and resetting the rail. Doors with four wheels take two pairs. Anti-jump blocks and bottom guides are small extras when they need replacing.
The early sign is a sound. A shower door that starts to grumble or squeal has bearings wearing out. Changed at that stage, the rail is usually still smooth. Left until the door drags, the skidding wheels may have scored the rail, and then the rail needs dressing smooth too.
Either way, the door should slide with one finger when we leave.
