This is the part of the city where noise is the main thing people want dealt with, and there is a great deal of confused advice about it. What actually reduces aircraft noise is fairly well understood, and some of the expensive options make far less difference than the cheap ones.
Seals first, because they are usually the problem
A window with hardened gaskets is effectively an open gap, and sound follows air.\n\nSo before spending anything on glass it is worth replacing the seals and adjusting the window so it closes tightly against them.\n\nThat is inexpensive and it frequently produces a bigger improvement than people expect, because they have been listening to a gap rather than through glass. We would always do this first and tell you what it achieved before quoting anything larger.
What double glazing does and does not do
Two panes with a sealed gap cut considerably more noise than one, and two panes of different thicknesses work better than two the same, because they do not resonate together.\n\nWhat matters as much is the frame and how well the opening section seals.\n\nA double glazed unit in a poorly sealing frame performs worse than a single pane in a tight one. So we treat the window as a whole rather than selling glass, which is why we ask to see it before quoting.
Secondary glazing, which is often the better answer
Where the existing window is sound, a second pane fitted on its own frame inside it addresses noise without replacing anything.\n\nIt performs well on low-frequency noise because the air gap is much larger than in a sealed unit, and that is exactly the kind aircraft produce.\n\nIt is also reversible and far less disruptive than replacing windows. The honest trade is that there are two surfaces to clean and it looks like what it is. For many houses here it is the most effective money spent.
