The short answer
An aluminium door that will not lock has usually dropped out of line with its frame. The lock bolt then misses the slot it should go into. The other common causes are a lock worn inside, or a worn hook lock on a sliding door. Most are fixed in one visit, unless a part has to be ordered first.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 5 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
The door has dropped, so the bolt misses the keeper
- How to tell
- The keeper is the metal plate in the frame that the lock bolt goes into. You have to lift the handle or push the door before the key will turn. Fresh scratches on the keeper show where the bolt now hits it.
- What we do
- We bring the door back to its height, with new hinges if the old ones have worn. Then we line the keeper up with the bolt again. Lining up the keeper needs no new part.

- How to tell
- The key turns, but the bolt does not move, or it moves only part of the way. The key feels stiff even when the door is open. Sometimes the handle also feels loose and droops.
- What we do
- We take out the lock body and the key cylinder, and fit a new set in the same place. Most aluminium door locks come in standard sizes. If your old lock is no longer made, we tell you what fits before we start.
Aluminium Door RepairFrom ₹2,070See this fixThe hook lock on a sliding door has worn
- How to tell
- A sliding aluminium or uPVC door locks with a hook set in the edge of its frame. The hook catches a keeper and pulls the door shut. A worn hook slips off the keeper when someone pushes the door.
- What we do
- We fit a new hook lock into the same cutout, and set the keeper so it pulls the door tight. We check the height of the door first. If worn rollers are the real cause, we tell you before we change anything.
Sliding Glass Door LockFrom ₹1,190 / lockSee this fixThe pull handle on a sliding door has snapped
- How to tell
- On many sliding doors, the flush pull handle and the lock are one part. When the handle breaks, nothing is left to move the hook.
- What we do
- We change the handle and the lock together, as one unit. Then we set the keeper so the door locks with an easy turn.
Sliding Glass Door LockFrom ₹1,190 / lockSee this fixThe door sticks before it shuts fully
- How to tell
- The door stops a little short of the frame unless you shove it. The lock only works after a hard push or a slam. You may see shiny rub marks where the door catches.
- What we do
- We follow the rub marks to find where the door binds. Then we set it square, so it closes with an easy push. Once it closes fully, the lock can reach the frame again.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Open the door and turn the key slowly, watching whether the bolt slides out easily.
- Look at the metal plate on the frame for fresh scratches where the bolt hits it.
- Check whether the gap above the closed door is wider at one end than the other.
- On a sliding door, close it slowly and watch whether the hook reaches its keeper.
- Take a short video of the door closing and locking, filmed from a step back.

Is it safe to spray oil into an aluminium door lock that is stiff?
We do not advise it. Oil holds dust, and the lock can end up stiffer than before. If the lock has worn inside, oil will not bring it back. Send us a video instead, and we will tell you what it needs.
Do I need a new door if my aluminium door lock is broken?
No. The lock sits inside the edge of the door and comes out on its own. The frame, the glass and the hinges stay as they are. A new door only makes sense when the frame itself has badly corroded.
My aluminium door locks only when I slam it. Will slamming damage it?
Over time, yes. Each slam shakes the hinges, the lock and the glass in the door. The fittings work a little looser every time. It is better to have the door set right than to keep slamming it.
What photos help you bring the right lock for an aluminium door?
Take a clear photo of the edge of the door, where the bolt comes out. Add one of the handle and one of the key side. Most aluminium door locks are standard, so these photos usually tell us which one to bring.
