The short answer
Most doors are hung with a gap underneath, so they clear the floor as they swing. The usual fix is a seal fitted to the bottom of the door. If the gap is uneven, the door has usually sagged and must be set square first. A very tall gap also needs a low strip fixed across the doorway.

- How to tell
- The gap is even from one side of the door to the other. At night you see a line of light under the door. Dust, insects or smells come through, or the AC room will not stay cool.
- What we do
- We fit a door sweep, a rubber strip on the bottom edge that lightly touches the floor. Over a polished or uneven floor, we fit a drop seal instead. A drop seal lowers onto the floor only when the door shuts.

- How to tell
- You can see well into the next room under the closed door. This usually happens when the door was cut too short at some point.
- What we do
- We fix a threshold, a low aluminium strip, across the doorway, and the door seal closes onto it. Adding wood to the bottom of the door is carpentry, which we do not do.

- How to tell
- The gap is wide at the hinge end and closes up at the handle end. That corner may brush the floor. A second gap often shows along the top of the door.
- What we do
- On aluminium and uPVC doors, we set the door square before any seal goes on. A seal on a sagging door drags at one end and leaves a gap at the other. Once the door hangs level, a seal can close the gap evenly.

- How to tell
- The latch is the sloped bolt that clicks into the frame. It now needs a lift or a hard push to catch. The gap under the door has closed at one end and grown at the other.
- What we do
- We reset the hinges and move the strike plate, the metal plate the latch clicks into. Then the gap can be sealed properly. If the wood has shrunk, split or rotted, a carpenter has to deal with that first.

What you can check first

- Stand on the dark side of a closed door and look for light along the bottom and sides.
- See whether the gap is the same height from one end of the door to the other.
- Check whether the door already brushes the floor anywhere as it swings.
- Notice what comes through the gap, such as dust, insects, noise or cold air.
- Note what the floor under the door is made of, such as stone, tile or wood.

Why is there a gap under my door when it is fairly new?
Doors are hung with a gap on purpose, so they clear uneven floors as they swing. The gap is not a fault by itself. It only needs a seal when dust, insects, noise or cold air come through it.
Can I fill the gap under my door with a foam strip from a shop?
You can, for a short time. Stick-on foam wears where the door rubs over it, and it can peel off. A fitted sweep or drop seal is fixed to the door and set to the floor. It is made for the job and does not make the door hard to open.
Will a seal under the door catch on a doormat or rug?
A fixed sweep can catch on a thick mat or rug. A drop seal lifts off the floor as the door opens, so the seal itself does not drag. The door still needs room to clear the mat. Tell us about any rug near the door, and we pick the seal to suit.
Does sealing under one door make the whole room quieter?
It helps, but the gaps at the sides and top of the door matter too. Sound passes through any gap around a door. We can fit slim seals along the frame as well. The door then closes onto soft rubber on every side.
