What Faridabad actually builds

Faridabad is the most industrial market we work in, and that changes the mix of work completely.

The factory sectors from 24 to 31 and the DLF Industrial Area want plant offices and shop-floor partitions: a supervisor's cabin looking onto the line, a quality room that has to stay clean, a canteen or meeting room partitioned off a working shed. This is large, straightforward glass at ground level, and it prices well for exactly that reason.

The sector housing - 14 to 21, and the NIT blocks - is kothis and market shopfronts, most of them on plots with a gate wide enough to reverse into. Access is genuinely easy here compared with anywhere in Delhi.

And Greater Faridabad, the Neharpar sectors, is new: towers and plotted houses handed over bare, where the work is a first fitting.

Working around a running shift

On an industrial job the constraint is never the lift. It is the line.

A partition going into a working shed has to fit around production, and the honest way to price that is to know the shift pattern before quoting. Some plants want the work done on the weekly off. Some want it between shifts. Some can shut one bay while the rest runs, which is the easiest case and the cheapest.

We also need to know what is happening around the glass. Dust and grinding sparks damage a finished panel, so glass usually goes in near the end of a fit-out rather than the beginning. Where there is hot work nearby, or a welding bay, that changes what we recommend - toughened glass is strong but it is not a spark screen, and the right answer there is sometimes a different material entirely. We will say so.

Shopfronts and the trading day

Along the Mathura Road, in the NIT markets and at Neelam Chowk, most of our non-industrial work is shopfronts, and the rule there is simple: the shop cannot lose a day.

A broken front is the most urgent job in this trade. The opening cannot be left overnight and the shutter usually cannot come down over a broken pane. So for a replacement in a standard thickness we move as fast as we can, often the same day.

A made-to-size toughened panel is different and it is worth being clear about it. Toughened glass takes three to five working days to cut, drill and toughen, and it cannot be rushed by paying more. Anybody promising you a toughened shopfront the same afternoon is either fitting plain glass, which is dangerous in a shop entrance, or has not measured it yet. Where the wait is a problem we can board the opening safely in the meantime.

What this work is called in Faridabad

On the industrial side people ask for a partition, a cabin, a supervisor cabin or a chamber, and they usually mean the same thing: a room built inside a larger space. Where it needs to move later, the answer is an aluminium or modular partition, which unbolts. Where it is permanent and wants to look it, the answer is frameless toughened glass on patch fittings.

On the housing side the words are the household ones. Shower cubicle, shower enclosure and bathroom glass partition all mean the screen that keeps water on the shower side. A glass railing is the balcony or staircase barrier. A shopfront, front glass or showroom glass is the face of a shop, and that is always toughened, because it is a public entrance.

Toughened, tempered and safety glass are one product under three names. For a shopfront, a shower or anything at floor level it is the only correct one.
