Most work here is in a property that has just been handed over, which is a good moment to fit an enclosure and a good moment to check a few things while the bathroom is still empty. Problems found now are the builder's to fix. Found in a year, they are yours.
What to check before the enclosure goes in
Once glass is fixed to a wall, anything behind it is difficult to get at, so this is the moment to look.\n\nThree things are worth checking: that the floor actually falls towards the drain, that no tile sounds hollow when tapped, and that the wall is straight where the glass will land.\n\nAll three are handover items, and all three are much easier to raise with a builder before you have fitted something over them. We check them as part of our survey and tell you what we find, whether or not you use us.
Waiting for the bathroom to be genuinely finished
An enclosure should be the last thing fitted in a bathroom, after tiling, after the sanitaryware and after any painting.\n\nFitted before, it gets damaged by other trades, and it makes their work harder, which usually means the silicone joint gets disturbed.\n\nSo we ask what else is still to be done before booking a fitting date. A week's wait for the painter to finish saves re-sealing a joint that has been knocked, and it is a much better order of work than trying to protect glass through the rest of a fit-out.
Choosing while the room is empty
In an empty bathroom you can still change your mind about where the shower goes, and that freedom disappears once anything is plumbed in and used.\n\nSo it is worth standing in the room and thinking about the door swing, where the towel will hang and whether you walk past the glass to reach the basin.\n\nWe tape the footprint out during the survey for exactly that reason. Ten minutes now is worth more than any specification decision you will make about the glass itself.
