The kothis here were built before a separate shower area was normal, so most of this work is putting an enclosure into a bathroom that never had one. The room is usually generous and the walls are usually thick. Neither of those is a problem, but both change what will seal properly.
An out-of-square corner decides framed or frameless
Frameless glass is cut square and cannot flex. If the two walls do not meet at a true right angle, a frameless panel leaves a tapering gap, and silicone filling a tapering gap is what fails first.\n\nHand-built walls of this age are often a degree or two out, which is invisible to the eye and obvious to a spirit level.\n\nSo we put a level on all three walls and check the corner before recommending anything. Where it is out, a slim frame absorbs the difference and seals reliably. It is the honest answer rather than the expensive one.
Drilling into a thick old wall
These walls are usually solid and deep, which is good news for a fixing - there is real material to anchor into.\n\nThe risk is the tile rather than the wall. Old glazed tile is brittle and chips outward if the drill wanders when it starts.\n\nSo we start the hole slowly without hammer action, then switch once the bit has bitten. It is a small thing and it is the difference between a clean hole and a chipped tile you look at every day.
Where the water actually goes in an old bathroom
A bathroom built before enclosures usually has one floor drain, and it is often not where the shower is.\n\nPut a sealed enclosure around a corner that does not fall towards that drain and the tray of water stays inside the glass.\n\nSo we check the fall with a level before deciding the footprint, and where the floor will not cooperate we either leave a deliberate gap at the base for water to escape, or set the enclosure where the fall actually runs. It is worth ten minutes at survey.
