The short answer
A door that rubs on the floor has usually sagged on worn or loose hinges, so its far corner drops. A heavy uPVC door can also settle a little in its frame. Most of these are hinge and alignment work on the door you have. A raised tile or a new floor laid higher is a flooring job, which we do not do.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 5 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
The door has sagged at its hinges
- How to tell
- The corner on the handle side scrapes a curved mark on the floor as it swings. A gap opens along the top of the door at the same end. It usually gets worse slowly, over months.
- What we do
- We make the hinge fixings solid again and set the door square. It then swings clear of the floor the whole way. If the hinges have worn badly from forcing, we change them as a pair.

- How to tell
- A hinge plate has pulled a little away from the wooden frame or the door. Its screws may turn round without getting tighter. You may hear a creak from the hinge side as the door scrapes.
- What we do
- We reset the hinges into sound wood, with larger fixings where the old holes have worn. If the wood around a hinge has split or rotted, a carpenter has to repair it first. We do not do carpentry.

- How to tell
- The hinge pin is the metal rod each hinge turns on. When it wears, the door drops and moves a little up and down in its hinges. A worn hinge may also squeak or click as the door moves.
- What we do
- We fit new hinges from a standard range and set the door back to its height. Setting the door is part of the same visit.

- How to tell
- The bottom of the door drags on the threshold, the raised strip at the doorway. The handle often feels stiff at the same time. That is because the lock no longer lines up with the frame.
- What we do
- We set the hinges or rollers so the door sits square again. Then we adjust the parts in the frame that the lock goes into. Setting the door first often means no new part is needed.

- How to tell
- The door grinds along instead of rolling. It feels heavy to move, and you may see scrape marks along the track.
- What we do
- We check the rollers and the track under the door. Worn rollers are priced before we fit new ones, and the door is set back to its height.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Look at the floor for a curved scrape mark, and note which corner of the door makes it.
- Check the gap along the top of the closed door for one end wider than the other.
- Look for a raised or loose tile where the door scrapes.
- Think back to whether the rubbing began after new flooring, or came on slowly.
- Notice whether a wooden door rubs more after heavy rain.

My wooden door only rubs on the floor after heavy rain. What does that mean?
The wood has probably taken in damp and swollen a little. If the hinges have also dropped, resetting them can lift the door clear. If it still rubs after that, a carpenter has to trim the bottom edge. That is carpentry, which we do not do.
The door started rubbing after new tiles were laid. Can you fix that?
Usually not. A higher floor leaves the door less room to swing over it. A wooden door then needs its bottom trimmed by a carpenter, or the floor needs changing by a tiler. Neither is work we do.
Can a door that rubs on the floor damage the floor?
Yes, over time. The scraping corner wears a curved mark into stone, tile and wooden floors. Each push past the tight spot also strains the hinges. Fixing the door early protects both.
Why does my door rub the floor only partway through its swing?
The floor may rise slightly in one place, and the corner catches there. If the door has also sagged, the rub gets worse. Setting the door to its right height can be enough. If the floor itself is the problem, that needs a tiler.
