The short answer
A sliding door that will not lock usually has a worn hook or worn rollers. Worn rollers let the door sink, so the hook misses the keeper, the part on the frame it catches. A keeper that has moved, or a frame out of square, are the other causes. We usually fix these in one visit, after checking the door height first.

The lock hook has worn
- How to tell
- Aluminium and uPVC sliders lock with a hook in the edge of the frame. When the hook wears round, the door pulls open even when it looks locked. On a frameless glass slider, the bolt stops dropping into the floor.
- What we do
- We fit a new lock into the same cutout in the frame or the glass. Then we set the keeper so the lock pulls the door snug before it holds.

- How to tell
- You have to push up on the handle before the lock will catch. The door has also become heavier to slide. Look closely and the hook sits just below its keeper.
- What we do
- New rollers lift the door back to its proper height, so the hook meets the keeper again. A new lock on a sunk door would fail again, so we fix the height first.

- How to tell
- The door closes but leaves a thin gap on the lock side. You hear the hook knock against the edge of the keeper. Grit in the track can also stop the door just short of its frame.
- What we do
- We clean the track, move the keeper and set the door's height on its rollers. When nothing has worn out, the repair visit is the whole cost.

- How to tell
- On an aluminium door, a corner joint of the frame can open. The door then binds at one corner and gaps at another. A snapped or loose handle can also leave the lock with nothing to turn it.
- What we do
- We pull an opened frame back into square, which takes longer than a lock change. Where the old lock set is no longer made, we fit a current type that suits the door.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Close the door slowly and watch whether the hook lines up with its keeper.
- If you already push up on the handle to lock it, the door has probably sunk.
- Look at the gap between the door and the frame on the lock side, top and bottom.
- Check whether the handle turns firmly, or feels loose and does nothing.
- Take a close photo of the lock and the keeper with the door open.

Is it safe to leave a balcony slider unlocked until it is repaired?
It depends on who can reach the balcony. A ground floor or shared terrace door is a risk worth fixing soon. On any floor, a door that does not lock can rattle and let in dust and rain. Keep it closed, and keep the room shut when you are out.
Will a new lock fit my old aluminium sliding door?
Usually, yes. Hook locks for sliders come in a few standard sizes, so a current lock fits most old cutouts. Where your type is no longer made, a near match usually fits with a small change. We tell you what fits before we fit it.
Does the door have to come out to fix a lock that will not catch?
Only if the rollers are the cause. A worn lock is changed with the door in place. New rollers need the door lifted out for a short time. It goes back in on the same visit.
