The short answer

A mirror usually comes off the wall because the glue behind it has failed. Some mirrors were stuck on with glue alone, with no clips or brackets to carry the weight. We refit a sound mirror with a better fixing, or make a new one to size. Damp or crumbling plaster behind the mirror is not work we do.

Why it happens

Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.

  1. The glue behind the mirror has let go

    How to tell
The mirror leans out at the top or at one side. You can see a gap behind it. Steam in a bathroom slowly weakens many glues.
    What we do
We refit the mirror with a fixing chosen for the wall and its weight. That can be clips, brackets or a glue made for mirrors.

  2. It was held by glue alone

    How to tell
You cannot see any clips, brackets or screws around the edge. A large mirror held only by glue depends on that glue lasting. Once it weakens, nothing else holds the mirror up.
    What we do
We add clips or brackets that carry the weight at the edges. The glue then only keeps the mirror flat to the wall.

  3. The wrong glue has damaged the backing

    How to tell
Dark patches show through the glass where glue was put on the back. Some glues attack the silver backing, the coating that makes a mirror reflect. The glue then loses its grip along with the coating.
    What we do
A mirror damaged this way does not refit well. We make a new mirror to size. It goes up with neutral-cure silicone, a type that is safe for the backing.

  4. The wall behind is damp or crumbling

    How to tell
The surface behind the mirror is soft, flaking or damp. No glue or screw holds well in a weak wall. You may see damp marks around the mirror's edges.
    What we do
Repairing damp walls or plaster is not work we do. A mason or a waterproofing contractor handles that. Once the wall is sound and dry, we refit the mirror or fit a new one.

What you can check first

These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.

  • Look along each edge from the side for a gap between the mirror and the wall.
  • Look for clips, brackets or screw heads around the edge, without pulling on them.
  • Look for dark patches on the mirror, especially near the part that is lifting.
  • Check the wall around the mirror for damp marks or soft, flaking plaster.
  • Take one photo from the front and one from the side.

If the mirror leans or moves, keep everyone clear of the space in front of it. Keep children away from the basin or shelf below it too. Do not push it back, prop it up or take it down yourself. A heavy mirror can slip and break as you handle it.

Common questions

Can you put back a mirror that has already come off the wall?

Yes, if it has no chips or cracks. We look at its edges and its backing first. A chipped mirror can crack later, so in that case we suggest a new one.

Is mounting tape enough to hold a bathroom mirror?

Not on its own for most mirrors. Heat and steam soften many tapes and glues over time. A bathroom mirror is safer with clips or brackets carrying its weight. The tape or glue then only keeps it flat.

Can a mirror be fixed on a tiled bathroom wall?

Usually, yes. The fixing depends on what the wall is made of and how heavy the mirror is. We look at the wall before choosing clips, brackets or glue.
