The short answer
A mosquito net or jali usually tears because strong sun has made the mesh brittle. The aluminium mesh frame that holds it lasts much longer than the mesh. If that frame is still straight, we keep it and fit new mesh. A bent or corroded frame needs a new mesh frame instead.

The mesh has aged and split
- How to tell
- The frame is straight, but the mesh has a hole or a split near a corner. Fibreglass mesh is a soft net woven from glass fibre. Strong sun turns it stiff before it tears.
- What we do
- We take the frame down and fit new mesh in the same frame. You can pick fibreglass again or stainless steel mesh, which is woven steel wire. Steel mesh does not turn brittle in the sun.

- How to tell
- There is no hole, but one side of the mesh has come away from the frame. It leaves a long slot that mosquitoes can get through.
- What we do
- The cord that grips the mesh in its groove has usually worn flat. We fit new mesh with fresh cord of the right size, pulled tight and even.

- How to tell
- The frame has a bend, a cracked corner or white powder along its edges. New mesh would not sit flat in it. Or the torn net had no frame at all.
- What we do
- We make a new mesh frame to the size of the window. It holds stainless steel mesh, which does not rust. The frame opens, slides or stays fixed to suit that window.

- How to tell
- The net tears again and again at the same corner. That is often a kitchen window, or one you reach through to hang clothes.
- What we do
- We replace the net with magnetic mesh, a framed panel edged with a magnetic strip. To reach through, you peel the panel off and snap it back afterwards. Nobody has to push against the mesh itself.

- Press gently near each edge to see whether the mesh has left its groove.

Is a torn mosquito net urgent to fix?
No, a torn net is not a safety problem, because mesh is not built to lean on. It only lets mosquitoes through the gap. Until the mesh is replaced, keeping that window shut in the evening helps.
Our cat keeps tearing the net. Is there tougher mesh?
A heavier pet mesh can go into the frames you already have. Stainless steel mesh also stands up to claws better than fibreglass. No mesh will hold back an animal that pushes hard. Mention pets when we measure, and we bring samples to choose from.
Do we need to take the frames down before you arrive?
No, leave them where they are. Taking each frame down and putting it back is part of the job. It also lets us check each frame before we fit the new mesh.
