The short answer
Shower glass usually breaks after a knock or a chip at its edge. A worn hinge or handle that lets metal press on the glass can also start a crack. We make broken glass safe the same day and take the pieces away. Then we fit a new toughened panel made to size, with its fittings put back.

A chip at the edge has given way
- How to tell
- The glass has burst into small pieces, or a crack runs in from one edge. You may remember a knock, or it may have broken with no warning. Toughened glass, the safety glass used in showers, is weakest at a chipped edge.
- What we do
- We clear the broken glass and make the shower safe to be near. Then we measure and fit a new toughened panel of the same type and thickness.

- How to tell
- The crack starts at a hinge, the metal fitting that holds the door. The hinge may have been loose or rusty before. When the rubber pads inside a hinge flatten, metal presses straight on the glass.
- What we do
- We fit the new glass with a new pair of bathroom hinges. Fresh gaskets, the rubber pads between hinge and glass, keep the metal off the glass.

- How to tell
- The crack runs out from the hole where the handle passes through the glass. The handle may have rocked loose for weeks, or been tightened too hard. Either way, metal met glass at the hole.
- What we do
- The new panel gets a new stainless handle, with fresh rubber washers on both sides. We tighten it snug and no further, so the hole is not strained.

What you can check first

- From a safe distance, look where the crack starts: an edge, a hinge or the handle.
- Photograph the whole panel and the fittings, without touching the glass.
- Note whether the door broke or a fixed panel, because their fittings differ.
- Look at the edges of the other panels for chips, without touching them.
Keep everyone out of the bathroom until the glass is cleared. Small pieces travel further than you expect, so nobody should walk in with bare feet. Keep children and pets well away. Do not touch, tape or push a cracked panel, because it can fall apart without warning.

Why did my shower glass break into small pieces and not long shards?
That is how toughened glass is made to break. It turns into small, blunt pieces instead of long sharp blades. The pieces can still cut, so do not pick them up by hand. It also shows the glass was the right safety glass for a shower.
Can I keep using the shower while a cracked panel waits for new glass?
No. A crack in toughened glass can finish breaking at any moment. We take the damaged panel out when we make it safe. After that, we tell you whether the shower can be used before the new glass goes in.
One panel broke. Does the whole shower enclosure have to be replaced?
Usually not. We replace the broken panel in the same type and thickness of glass. The other panels and fittings stay, if they are sound. We look at their edges while we are there and tell you if one is chipped.
Why can new shower glass not be cut to fit on the day you measure?
Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled once it is made. So the size and every hole for the hinges and handle come first. Only then is the glass toughened. That is why we measure on one visit and fit on the next.
