The short answer
Window glass usually cracks from a knock, or from a loose pane hitting its metal frame. A crack cannot be repaired, so the pane is replaced. Broken glass is usually made safe the same day. The new glass is made to the size we measure. If loose strips or shrunk rubber caused the crack, we renew those too.

- How to tell
- The crack spreads out from one point, which may have a small chip. You may remember a bang, a ball or a shutter closed too hard.
- What we do
- We take out the cracked glass, clear it away and make the opening safe. Then we fit new glass made to size, to match the glass you have. We take the broken glass away with us.

- How to tell
- The crack starts at an edge, right next to the frame. A strip that holds the glass may be missing on that side. The pane may have moved or clicked for a while before it cracked.
- What we do
- We fit the new glass and new strips matched to your frame. The pane is set on fresh rubber and clamped all round, so it sits firm.

- How to tell
- The crack starts at a corner or an edge. The rubber around the glass is hard, has gaps, or has fallen out in pieces. Other panes on the same wall may rattle.
- What we do
- New rubber cannot mend a crack, so the cracked pane is replaced. The new glass goes in on new rubber. Other panes with the same old rubber are worth doing before they crack too.

What you can check first

- Look at where the crack starts: in the glass itself, or at the edge beside the frame.
- Look along the frame, from inside, for a strip around the glass that is missing or loose.
- Look at the rubber around the glass, and at other windows on the same wall.
- Take a photo of the whole window and a close one of the crack, from inside the room.
Stop opening or sliding a window with cracked glass. Keep people, and children most of all, away from it. Do not press on the crack, stick tape on it from outside or reach out of the window. If pieces have fallen inside, keep everyone out of that part of the room.

Can a crack in window glass be repaired instead of replaced?
No. A cracked pane cannot be made strong again. Glue or film may hide the crack, but the glass stays weak. We replace the pane and keep the frame, if the frame is sound.
Will a small crack in my window spread?
It can, and nobody can say when. Wind, sun and the shutter moving all put stress on the glass. Keep the shutter still, and have the pane replaced soon.
Can the new pane be a stronger kind of glass?
Often, yes, where the frame can hold it. We can supply laminated glass, which holds together if it breaks. The frame and its rubber decide what thickness fits. We tell you the choices when we measure.
Why did my window glass crack when nothing hit it?
A pane can crack at the edge after touching its metal frame for a long time. That happens when the rubber shrinks, or a strip falls off. Every gust then moves the glass against the metal. Slowly, a small chip at the edge becomes a crack.
