The short answer
A sliding window usually comes off its track when the guides wear out or a roller collapses. Guides are the small parts at the top that hold it upright. The shutter, the part that moves, then rocks until one end slips out. Do not lift it back in with your hands on the glass. We refit it and fix the part that let it come out.

- Before it came out, the shutter wobbled as you slid it. Now its top or bottom edge has left the channel. The rollers still seemed to turn well.

- We ease the shutter back in and reset or replace the guides. We also clean the track and set the shutter height, so it runs straight.

- How to tell
- The shutter sits much lower at one end, and that end came out first. Before that, the low end dragged or scraped along the track.
- What we do
- We fit a new pair of rollers, the small wheels under the shutter. We reset the guides as well. The shutter goes back in at the right height and sits level.

- How to tell
- uPVC shutters are heavy, so one failed roller makes them lean. One end has slipped off the track. The interlock, the edge where the two shutters meet, no longer lines up.
- What we do
- We refit the shutter on rollers made for your uPVC window system. Then we set the height so the interlock and the lock line up again.

- How to tell
- The shutter is jammed at an angle and will not slide either way. It feels held at one corner, or it seems ready to tip.
- What we do
- A wedged shutter has to come free in the right order, or the glass can break. We ease it out without force. Then we fix whatever let it jump.

What you can check first

- Look from inside the room and note whether the top or the bottom has come out.
- See whether the shutter is leaning, but do not push it to find out.
- Clear the floor under the window, and keep children and pets away from it.
- Take one photo of the whole window and a close one of the end that came out.
Stop using the window if the shutter leans, rocks or has left its track at the top. Do not try to lift it back in, and do not lean out to look. A loose shutter can fall into the room or out of the building.

Can I put a sliding window back on its track myself?
We do not advise it. A shutter with its glass is heavy and hard to hold. If a guide or a roller has failed, it will soon come out again anyway. Leave it where it is and keep people away.
Why did the window come out of its track while I was just opening it?
The fault was there before that day. Worn guides let the shutter rock a little more each time. A wearing roller lets one end sink lower. The last slide was simply the one that lifted it out.
Is the glass usually damaged when a shutter comes off its track?
Often it is not, as long as the shutter did not fall. We look at the glass edges and the frame corners while the shutter is out. If the glass has a chip or a crack, we tell you before we refit it.
