The short answer
A single pane of glass lets the sun's heat and hot outside air warm the room. Gaps around the frame and worn seals let hot air in as well, which makes an AC work harder. Double glazed windows slow the heat through the glass. Sealing the gaps stops the hot air. We do not fit window film or blinds.
The useful distinction
Feel whether the heat is moving air or a warm pane
Hold your hand near the closed window on a hot afternoon. Warm air moving at the edges means hot outside air is leaking in through gaps. Steady warmth from the whole pane means heat is passing through the glass itself. Sealing answers the first. Only different glass answers the second.

Heat passes straight through a single pane
- How to tell
- The window gets strong sun for part of the day. The glass is hot to touch, and the room near it stays warm even with the AC on. There is no draught at the edges.
- What we do
- We replace the window with a double glazed one. It has two panes with a sealed air gap between them, and the gap slows the heat. The new frame is uPVC or aluminium, with rubber seals on every closing edge. The same window also cuts noise from the road.

- How to tell
- You feel warm air moving at the edges of a closed window. A sliding window leaks most where its two shutters meet in the middle. The AC runs for long hours and the room still warms up quickly.
- What we do
- We set the shutters so they close tight and renew the flat brush strips and seals. This keeps cooled air in and hot air out. It is a much smaller job than a new window, so it is worth doing first.

- How to tell
- A dark line or a crack runs where the window frame meets the wall. Dust and hot air both come through it. On a windy day you can feel it with your hand.
- What we do
- We clean out the joint and fill a deep gap with foam cord. It is then sealed inside and outside with weather-grade silicone.

Will double glazed windows make my room cool without an AC?
No. Double glazing slows the heat coming in, but it does not cool a room. It helps an AC room hold its temperature for longer. Shade on the outside of the window also helps a great deal.
Do you fit sun control film or blinds for heat?
No, we do not fit film or blinds. What we do is glass, frames and seals. For heat, that means double glazed windows and sealing the gaps that let hot air in.
Can double glazed glass go into my existing window frames?
Usually not. A double glazed unit is much thicker than a single pane, and most old frames have no room for it. That is why we fit it as a new window, with a frame made for it.
