A window handle usually snaps because it was forced against a shutter that drags. A loose handle usually has screws that no longer grip the frame. On aluminium and uPVC windows, we fit a new handle on the window you have. We check the shutter and the lock at the same time.

- How to tell
- The lever has broken off, or it rocks when you hold it. Tightening the screws helps for a few days, then it wobbles again. That means the screw holes in the frame have worn.
- What we do
- We fit a new handle made for your window. Where the old holes have worn, we make fresh fixing points. Before we fit it, we slide the shutter to check it is not dragging.

- How to tell
- The handle has cracked near its base, or it turns round without locking anything. The square metal pin inside it, called the spindle, may have sheared.
- What we do
- We test the lock gear inside the frame with a spare spindle. If the gear is healthy, we fit a new handle with the right spindle length. If the gear has failed, we price it separately first.

- How to tell
- The handle was hard to turn for weeks before it broke. The shutter may rub on the frame, or show a gap at one corner.
- What we do
- A new handle on a dropped shutter would be forced again. So we set the shutter square and adjust the keepers, the parts the lock bolts go into. Then the new handle can turn without strain.

- How to tell
- The handle is still whole, but the sliding window will not hold shut. The catch may be cracked, or its spring may have gone.
- What we do

Can I buy a window handle from a shop and fit it myself?
On some windows you can, but matching is harder than it looks. Aluminium handles come in left and right versions. uPVC handles need the right spindle length and screw spacing. A handle that does not match locks badly and breaks again.
Why did my window handle break when it was not old?
Usually it was forced. A shutter that drags puts its load on the handle each time you close it. The handle is the weakest point, so it gives way first. We check the shutter, so the new handle is not forced in the same way.
Will a new window handle match the ones on my other windows?
We match the type and the fixing to your window first. uPVC handles come in white and the common frame colours. On an older aluminium window, a new handle may look a little newer than the rest.
Is a loose window handle worth fixing before it snaps?
Yes. A handle that rocks makes its screw holes larger every time you use it. Left longer, it can come off in your hand. Then the window cannot be locked until it is fixed.
