The short answer
Window glass that rattles usually has glazing rubber that has shrunk. That is the rubber strip that holds the glass firm. A missing strip around the glass, worn rollers or a loose lock can also cause it. Fixed early, the glass itself is usually still fine.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
The rubber around the glass has shrunk
- How to tell
- The pane buzzes when the wind blows or a heavy vehicle passes. The rubber shows gaps at the corners of the glass. A thin line of dust on the sill often comes with it.
- What we do
- We take out the old rubber and fit new rubber sized to your glass and frame. The pane then sits firm and quiet. While the rubber is out, we check the glass for cracks.

- How to tell
- A thin strip runs round the glass to hold it in the frame. One length of it is cracked, loose or missing. The rattle comes from that side of the pane.
- What we do
- We set the glass on fresh rubber and fit new strips that match your frame. The corners are cut neatly, so the strips clamp the glass all round.
Loose Window Glass RepairFrom ₹935 / windowSee this fixWorn rollers let the whole shutter shake
- How to tell
- The whole shutter, the part that slides, shakes in its frame, not only the glass. It also slides roughly or sits lower at one end.
- What we do
- We fit new rollers, the small wheels under the shutter, and reset the guides that hold it upright. The shutter then sits level and still in its track.

- How to tell
- The window is locked, but the shutter still knocks when the wind pushes it. You can move it a little by hand against the catch.
- What we do
- We move the keeper, the part the catch goes into, so the catch pulls the shutter snug. If the catch itself has worn, we fit a new one.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- On a windy day, listen closely and note whether the glass or the whole shutter makes the sound.
- Look at the rubber around the glass from inside, especially at the corners.
- Look along the inside of the frame for a strip that is cracked, loose or missing.
- Lock the window and see whether the shutter still moves in its frame.

Does rattling glass mean the pane could fall out?
Usually not, while the glass still sits in its frame. A rattle means the pane has room to move. Over time, that movement can chip the edge of the glass. If you can see the glass shift, or a strip has fallen, treat it as urgent.
Will fixing the rattle also cut some of the outside noise?
Usually a little, yes. Shrunk rubber leaves small gaps around the glass. Sound and dust come through those gaps, as well as the rattle. New rubber closes them.
Can I stop the rattle with tape or folded paper?
It may go quiet for a day, but nothing is holding the glass. Tape can also hide a chip or a crack that needs to be seen. Do not push anything between the glass and the frame.
Do only old windows rattle?
Older windows rattle more often, because sun hardens the rubber over the years. Windows that face the afternoon sun usually go first. A window of any age can rattle if its lock holds the shutter loosely.
