The short answer
A window that will not lock usually has a worn lock catch or keeper. The keeper is the part the catch goes into. A broken handle can do the same. So can a shutter that has dropped and no longer lines up with the frame. Most are fixed with one new part or an adjustment, on the window you have.

The lock catch or its keeper has worn
- How to tell
- The catch clicks, but the shutter still slides open with a firm pull. Or the catch no longer springs out at all. This is a fault on sliding aluminium windows.
- What we do
- We fit a new catch and set the keeper so the catch goes fully in. Then we test the locked window by pulling on it. Where only the keeper has worn, it may need setting rather than a new part.

- How to tell
- The handle moves but does not hook into the frame. Or it wobbles on its screws. On a window that swings open, the handle no longer pulls the shutter tight.
- What we do
- We fit a new handle matched to your window. If the screw holes have worn, we make firm new fixing points first. We set the keeper so the handle catches on the first try.

- How to tell
- The handle turns round freely, and nothing locks. A uPVC handle drives a multi-point lock. That is a set of bolts that lock the shutter at several points around the frame.
- What we do
- We take the handle off and test the lock gear behind it first. If the gear works, a new handle is all it needs. A worn gear is priced as its own part.

- How to tell
- The shutter stops a little before the frame, so the catch has nothing to go into. It may need a hard shove at the end, or it will not move at all.
- What we do
- We find what is holding the shutter before we use any force. We free it and fix the cause, such as a packed track or a seized roller. Any part it needs is priced before we fit it.

- How to tell

What you can check first

- Lock the window, then pull the shutter firmly by its frame to see if it holds.
- Watch the catch as the window closes, and see whether it goes into the keeper.
- Look for light along the closing edge or at one corner when the window is shut.
- Turn the handle gently and notice whether it spins freely, stops hard or feels normal.
- Take a close photo of the handle and the catch, and one of the whole window.

Which windows in my home most need a lock with a key?
The ones a stranger could reach. That means ground floor windows, windows beside a pipe, and windows onto a shared corridor. Upper floor windows in a child's room are worth it too. The rest are usually fine with a normal catch.
Should I replace the lock or the handle on my window?
It depends on the window. On many sliding aluminium windows, the catch and the handle are separate parts. On a uPVC window, the handle drives the lock, so a handle fault stops the locking too. We test which part has failed before we fit anything.
Does a window that will not lock let in more dust and rain?
Usually, yes. The lock pulls the shutter tight against its seal. A shutter that is only resting shut leaves a thin gap along its edge. Wind pushes dust and rain through that gap.
