The short answer

A window whistles when wind forces air through a narrow gap. On sliding windows, the gap is usually where the two moving parts meet, or along worn seals. A hum or buzz from the glass itself points to shrunken rubber around the pane. These are usually fixed in one visit.

Why it happens

Usually one of these 3 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.

  1. Wind is squeezing through the middle of the window

    How to tell
The whistle is loudest near the upright line where the two sliding shutters overlap. That line is the interlock, and its hooks should close tight. A dropped shutter leaves a thin slit there.
    What we do
We reset the shutter on its wheels so the interlock closes along its full height. We renew flat brush strips in the same visit.

  2. The seals have flattened and left a slot

    How to tell
Seals are the rubber or brush strips along the shutter edges. When they flatten, the whistle comes from a side or the bottom edge. The shutter often rattles in the same gusts.
    What we do
We fit new strips that fill the slot properly. Then we set the catches so the shutter is held firm and cannot buzz.

  3. The rubber holding the glass has shrunk

    How to tell
The glass is held firm by glazing rubber, a rubber strip inside the aluminium frame. When it shrinks, gusts make the pane hum or buzz. You may see the rubber pulled back from the corners.
    What we do
We remove the old rubber and fit a new length matched to your glass. The pane then sits firm, and the hum from the glass goes.

What you can check first

These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.

  • On a windy day, move slowly along the window and listen for where the sound is loudest.
  • Press the locked shutter gently while it whistles, and notice whether the sound changes.
  • Rest a fingertip lightly on the glass during a gust and feel for a buzz.
  • Record a short video with sound on a windy day.

Common questions

Why has my window started whistling when it used to be quiet?

The gap has grown slowly. Seals flatten, rubber shrinks and the wheels under the shutter wear, so it drops a little. At some point the slit becomes the right size to whistle.

Does a whistling window mean the glass could come loose?

Not usually. A whistle from the shutter edges is moving air, not loose glass. A hum or rattle from the pane itself is more worth checking. Glass that moves when you press it gently should be looked at soon.

Can rain get in through the same gap that whistles?

It can. A gap wide enough to whistle can let blown rain in during a storm. A wet line along that edge means both have the same cause. New seals close the gap for both.

Why does the whistle come and go during a storm?

It follows the gusts. A strong gust forces more air through the slit, and the note starts. When the gust drops, the air slows and the window goes quiet. The gap is still there between gusts.
