The short answer

A glass door that will not close properly has usually dropped out of line. The other common causes are a worn floor spring, a worn hinge or a lock that catches. Most of these are fixed in one visit, on the glass you already have.

Why it happens

Usually one of these 5 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.

  1. The door has dropped out of line

    How to tell
The gap along the closing edge is wide at the top and tight at the bottom. The door may touch the floor on the way shut. Or it closes, then bounces back open a little.
    What we do
We set the door square in its fittings again, in small steps. We stop when the gap runs even and the door shuts without a push. Many doors need no new part at all.

  2. The floor spring has worn out

    How to tell
A floor spring is the metal box set into the floor under the door. It pulls the door shut. When it wears, the door stops short, drifts open or swings loosely. Oil on the floor plate means it is leaking.
    What we do
A leaking floor spring cannot be put right. We lift the door off and fit a new unit rated for its weight. Then we set the closing speed.

  3. A hinge has worn or come loose

    How to tell
This happens on doors that hang on hinges, like cabin and shower doors. The door sags on the handle side. You may see rust on the hinge, or the glass slipped inside it.
    What we do
We change the pair of hinges on the glass you have, with new rubber pads. Then we level the door so it closes cleanly.

  4. The lock is catching

    How to tell
The door swings shut but will not stay shut. You hear the bolt hit the edge of the lock box instead of going in. Or you have to push hard before the key turns.
    What we do
Often the lock box on the floor or the frame only needs lining up. If the lock itself has worn, we fit a new one with new keys.

  5. More than one fitting has moved

    How to tell
Older doors on busy entrances often have two or three small faults at once. The door has dropped, the spring is tired and the handle is loose.
    What we do
One repair visit covers the whole door. We check every fitting, fix what has moved, and price any worn part before we fit it.

What you can check first

These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.

  • Look at the gap along the closing edge. An even gap from top to bottom means the door is still square.
  • Look at the floor plate under the door. Oil on it means the floor spring is leaking.
  • Open the door halfway and let go. A healthy door closes by itself, slowly, without a bang.
  • Check the floor where the door swings. Grit or a raised tile can stop a door short.
  • Take a short video of the door closing. It helps us bring the right part.

Stop using the door if the glass has a chip or crack near a hinge or the floor. Book a visit soon, because a damaged edge is where toughened glass breaks.

Common questions

Why has my glass door stopped closing after years of working well?

Everyday use moves the fittings a little at a time. Screws ease, pivots wear and the floor spring loses its oil. After a few years the door no longer meets its closing line. Nothing has to break for this to happen.

Can I adjust the floor spring myself?

We do not advise it. Most settings are reached with the door lifted off, and a glass door is heavy. A wrong setting can also make the door slam, which stresses the glass. Send us a video instead, and we will tell you what it needs.

Will a glass door that does not close need new glass?

Almost never. Toughened glass does not bend or warp. The parts around it wear and move. Unless the glass is cracked or chipped, we fix the fittings and keep your door.

Is setting the door cheaper than a new floor spring?

Usually, yes, because setting needs no new part. A new floor spring is a part plus the fitting. We check the setting first, and we only fit a part when the old one has worn out. Both prices are in the table on this page.
