The short answer

A door closer that squeaks or creaks usually has a dry pivot or a loose fixing. Cleaning, grease and tightening often fix those without a new part. A grind from inside the closer, or a bang as the door shuts, means it is wearing out. Then a new closer is the lasting fix.

Why it happens

Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.

  1. The top pivot has run dry

    How to tell
A squeak comes from the top corner of the door as it swings. On a frameless door, that is the pivot, the pin the door turns on.
    What we do
We clean away old oil and grease the part that is making the sound. Then we open and close the door again and again to check it stays quiet.

  2. A fixing on the closer has worked loose

    How to tell
A creak or a click comes as the door starts to move and takes its weight. The sound then fades as the door carries on swinging.
    What we do
We tighten the fixing that has eased and check the others nearby. If the door has settled and now touches something, we set it back square on the same visit.

  3. A part inside the closer has worn

    How to tell
A grinding or clicking comes from the floor spring itself, the closer set into the floor. It quietens after greasing, then comes back after a while.
    What we do
Grease quietens a worn closer only for a time. A new closer is the lasting fix, and you can choose when to fit it.

  4. The closer has lost its oil and the door bangs

    How to tell
The loudest sound is a thump as the door shuts, not a squeak. There may be oil on the floor near the closer, or streaks under an overhead arm.
    What we do
Neither setting nor grease will quieten a closer that has lost its oil. We fit a new one suited to the door and set it to close softly.

What you can check first

These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.

  • While someone else opens the door, note whether the sound is high up or at the floor.
  • Notice when the noise comes: as the door starts, during the swing, or as it shuts.
  • Look for an oily ring on the floor, or oil streaks under an overhead arm.
  • Do not spray oil on the pivot or closer, as it soon makes the noise worse.

Common questions

Is a noisy door closer about to stop working?

Not always. A squeak from a dry pivot is a small job, and the closer may still be healthy. A grind from inside it, or a bang as the door shuts, means real wear. That closer is worth changing before it fails.

On a frameless door, is the noise from the closer or from the hinges?

A frameless door on a floor spring has no side hinges. It turns on a pivot at the top and on the floor spring at the bottom. So the sound comes from one of those two places. On a framed door, the closer arm and the side hinges can both make noise.

Is it worth greasing a closer that will need replacing anyway?

It can be. Grease can keep a worn closer quiet for a while, and you pick when to change it. If the closer is also leaking or slamming, grease will not help. Then changing it sooner makes more sense.
