The short answer
A sliding door that grinds or scrapes usually has worn rollers, the small wheels under it. A rumble or a click at one spot points to grit or damage in the track. A rattle or a bang usually means a guide or a stopper has worked loose. Most noisy doors are quiet again after one visit.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 3 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
A roller has stopped turning or worn flat
- How to tell
- A scrape or grind that follows the door along its whole run is the roller. The wheel is dragging instead of turning. A regular thump as the door moves means a wheel has worn flat on one side.
- What we do
- We change the rollers for a pair rated for the door's weight. The noise stops, and the door moves with less effort too. We check the track at the same time.

- How to tell
- The track is the groove the rollers run along. A low rumble means grit is ground into it. A sharp click at one place is usually a dent or a ridge that the rollers climb.
- What we do
- We file the track smooth, take the ridge down and clean the groove to bare metal. On a balcony door we also clear the drain slots, the small slots that let rainwater out.
Sliding Door Track RepairFrom ₹1,710See this fixA guide or a stopper has worked loose
- How to tell
- The door rattles in its frame as it moves, or when the wind blows. It bangs hard at the end of its run instead of stopping gently. A door that has dropped can also knock the frame as it closes.
- What we do
- We tighten or replace the guides and the end stopper, and set the door's height. Setting is part of the repair visit, and any new part is priced first.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Slide the door slowly and listen for where the sound starts and stops.
- Noise along the whole run points to the rollers, and a click at one spot to the track.
- Vacuum the track and slide the door again, because loose grit alone can rumble.
- Record a short video with the sound on, close to the bottom of the door.
- Do not spray oil or grease into the track, as it collects grit and grinds louder later.

Will a spray lubricant quieten a grinding sliding door?
Only for a short time. The fault is in the bearing inside the wheel, and spray on the track does not fix it. The spray stays in the track, where it catches dust. Soon after, the grinding usually comes back louder.
Does a noisy sliding door mean it is about to fail?
Often it is an early warning. A grinding roller usually keeps wearing until the door is hard to move. A loose guide can let the door jump the track later. Fixing it while it is only noisy usually means fewer parts.
Why does my closed sliding door rattle when it is windy?
The door is loose in its frame. Worn guides, or a door that has dropped, let it knock against the frame in each gust. We reset the guides and the door's height so it sits firm.
