The short answer
A sliding window that is hard to slide usually has worn rollers, the small wheels under the shutter. The shutter is the part of the window that moves. Dirt packed in the track, a dent or a broken lock catch can also make it drag. Most of these are fixed in one visit, on the window you already have.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
The rollers under an aluminium shutter have worn
- How to tell
- The window needs a lift before it starts to move. It may grind, or move in small jerks as you slide it. The shutter can also sit higher at one end.
- What we do
- We lift the shutter out and fit a new pair of rollers sized to it. We clean the track, the metal channel the rollers run in. Then we set the roller height so the shutter slides with light hands.

- How to tell
- uPVC shutters are heavy, so their rollers carry more weight. When the rollers wear, the shutter drags and drops a little. The handle often starts to turn hard at the same time.
- What we do
- We match the rollers to your uPVC window system and fit the pair. Then we set the height so the shutter slides, meets its seals and locks without force.

- How to tell
- The window feels heavy the whole way, without any jerking. Or it catches at the same spot every time. A shutter that scrapes one side may have worn guides, the small parts that keep it straight.
- What we do
- One repair visit covers the track, the guides and the height of the shutter. We clean the track, smooth a rough length and reset the guides. Any part, such as rollers, is priced before we fit it.

- How to tell
- The shutter slides well until the last part, then drags or stops short. The lock lever may feel loose, or it may not spring back. This happens on sliding aluminium windows.
- What we do
- We fit a new catch and set the keeper, the part the catch goes into. The shutter then closes the whole way without a push, and locks.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Slide it slowly by the frame, and notice whether it is hard all along or at one spot.
- Listen as it moves, because grinding or thudding usually points to worn rollers.
- Look along the track with a torch for packed dirt, a dent or standing water.
- Clear loose dirt from the track with a vacuum or a soft brush, then slide it again.
- Do not oil the track, because oil holds dust and the track clogs faster.

Can I keep using a sliding window that is hard to move?
You can, but move it gently and only by its frame. Pushing harder wears the track as well as the rollers. A worn track costs more to put right than rollers alone. Pushing on the glass can also crack it.
Is a hard to slide window different on aluminium and uPVC?
The causes are the same, but the parts are not. uPVC shutters are heavier, and each uPVC system has its own roller shape. Aluminium rollers are smaller and follow common patterns. A photo of the window helps us bring the right pair.
Will cleaning the track be enough to make it slide again?
Sometimes, if the rollers still turn freely. Years of packed dust can make a good window feel heavy. If it still drags after a clean, the rollers have usually worn. We clean the track as part of every roller job anyway.
Why does one shutter slide easily and the other one drag?
Each shutter runs on its own pair of rollers, and one pair can wear first. The shutter you open most often usually wears first. We check both shutters and change only the pair that needs it.
