What Delhi actually builds
Delhi is mostly not new construction, and that is the single fact that shapes our work here. The job is usually going into a building that already exists and is already occupied.
A South Delhi builder floor is being redone one flat at a time while the flats above and below are lived in. A Nehru Place office is a small suite inside a tower from the eighties, where the lift is the real constraint. A Karol Bagh showroom wants its front changed without losing a trading day. A Dwarka society flat needs the committee's permission before a single panel arrives at the gate.
So in Delhi we plan the access before we plan the glass. That is the opposite order to a new building, and it is why we ask for your floor, your lift size and your society's work hours on the first call.
Permission is a real step here, not a formality
In most Delhi buildings somebody other than you has to agree before work starts. In a co-operative group housing society in Dwarka or Rohini that is the RWA, and they usually have written hours, a gate register and sometimes a refundable deposit. In a Connaught Place block anything that changes what faces the corridor needs the estate office, because the frontage is heritage-controlled. In a rented office it is the landlord, and the question is always whether the work comes out again at the end.
We do not treat this as your problem to solve alone. Tell us who has to say yes and we will give you the drawing, the material list and the timing they will ask for. What we will not do is start work and hope nobody notices. That ends with a half-fitted partition and a stop-work notice.
The lift, the stair and the gali
Toughened glass cannot be cut, trimmed or bent once it is made. It is made to a size and that size has to physically reach your room. In Delhi three things get in the way, and they are worth naming.
The lift. Most Delhi lifts from before 2010 take a panel no longer than about seven feet on the diagonal. We measure the lift car and the door on the same visit as the room.
The stair. Builder floors in Greater Kailash, Lajpat Nagar and the colonies almost never have a service lift, so panels go up by hand, and the turn in the stair sets the maximum size.
The lane. In Karol Bagh, Hauz Khas Village and the old markets a vehicle standing outside becomes a problem in minutes. We deliver early, unload, and move the vehicle before anything is carried up.
Where a panel will not make it, we build the run as two panels with a slim joint. From a few feet away you cannot see it.
What this work is called in Delhi
People ask for the same job under a lot of different names, and it is worth saying which ones we answer to. An office glass partition is a cabin or a meeting room in toughened glass. A glass cabin and a glass chamber mean the same thing. Shower partition, bathroom glass partition and shower glass door all describe the screen that keeps water on the shower side. An aluminium partition is glass or board held in a slim metal frame, and because it unbolts it is often sold as a modular or a removable partition, which matters in a rented office.
Toughened glass, tempered glass and safety glass are three names for one thing. If somebody quotes you plain glass for a partition or a shower, that is a different and more dangerous product, and it should not cost the same.
If you are not sure which one your job is, send a photograph. We will tell you what it is called and what it costs.
