The DDA flats here were built to a handful of layouts, so the bathrooms are nominally the same across thousands of homes. In practice they vary by a few centimetres from block to block and floor to floor, and that variation is exactly the range where a stock enclosure stops fitting properly.
Nominally identical bathrooms, measured anyway
Two flats built to the same drawing are usually within a few centimetres of each other, not identical.\n\nA stock enclosure sized to the drawing will either need packing out at one side or will not close the gap at all.\n\nSo we measure every bathroom even where the block is uniform, and make the glass to that measurement. The difference in cost against a stock size is small. The difference between a sealed enclosure and one with a packed gap behind it is not.
Working with a bathroom door that opens inwards
In these layouts the bathroom door almost always opens inwards, and it swings into exactly the space where an enclosure wants to go.\n\nSo the two have to be planned together, and the usual solution is a sliding or bi-fold shower door so the two swings never conflict.\n\nWhere the room is very tight, rehanging the bathroom door to open outwards frees up a surprising amount, and it is a cheap change. We mention it because it is often the thing that makes a good layout possible.
Old plumbing behind a new enclosure
In a flat of this age the pipework behind the tiling is original, and it will need attention at some point.\n\nSealing an enclosure permanently across an access point means breaking it out when that day comes.\n\nSo we ask where the stop valve and any access panel are, and we keep the enclosure clear of them where we can. It changes nothing about the cost and it means a future plumbing repair does not also cost you a shower enclosure.
