The short answer
A mirror turns black at the edges when moisture reaches its silver backing. Steam, splashes and sprayed cleaner get in where the edges were left unsealed. The damage cannot be repaired, so the fix is a new mirror. For damp rooms we suggest copper-free mirror with sealed edges, which resists this spotting.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
Steam has reached the backing at the edges
- How to tell
- Black or dark grey marks start at the edges and corners, then creep inward. The mirror hangs in a bathroom or close to a shower. The front of the glass is clean and smooth.
- What we do
- We make a new mirror to size in copper-free mirror glass, which resists damp better. We seal its edges before it goes up.

- How to tell
- The marks are worst along the bottom, where sprayed cleaner runs down and sits. You may see dark streaks rising from the lower edge.
- What we do
- Your new mirror gets sealed edges, so liquid cannot creep behind the glass. Spray cleaner onto a cloth, not straight onto the mirror.

- How to tell
- Dark patches show in the middle, in spots or lines, not only at the edges. They often match where glue was put on the back.
- What we do
- We fix the new mirror with neutral-cure silicone, which does not eat into mirror backing. Where the wall suits them, clips or brackets carry the weight instead.

- How to tell
- The black spreads from where the mirror sits against the wall. The wall beside the mirror feels damp or shows marks. A new mirror on a wet wall will spoil the same way.
- What we do
- Curing damp in a wall is not work we do. A waterproofing contractor or a mason deals with that. Once the wall is dry, we fit a new mirror with sealed edges.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Look where the black starts: all the edges, the bottom edge, or spots in the middle.
- Wipe a mark gently with a dry cloth, because damage to the backing will not wipe off.
- Check the wall beside the mirror for damp marks or peeling.
- Think about your cleaner, and whether it is sprayed straight onto the glass.

Can the black edges on a mirror be cleaned off or covered up?
No. The marks are behind the glass, in the silver backing itself. Cleaning the front cannot reach them. Anything put on the back will not bring the reflection back either.
Is a mirror with black edges unsafe to keep?
No. The damage is to the reflective coating, not the strength of the glass. It only looks worse as it spreads inward. You can keep using the mirror until the new one is fitted.
Can my new mirror be the same size and shape as the old one?
Yes. We measure the space on site and make the new mirror to those sizes. You can also change the size or the edge finish at the same time. A bevelled edge, which is cut at an angle, costs more than a polished one.
Is copper-free mirror only worth it in a bathroom?
It suits any damp spot, such as a bathroom, a kitchen or beside a washbasin. In a dry room, ordinary mirror usually lasts well. We suggest the type that suits where your mirror will hang.
