The short answer
A glass door that closes too fast usually has a door closer that has lost its oil. On most frameless doors, the closer is a floor spring set into the floor under the door. The other common cause is a closer set to close too fast. Both are usually put right in one visit.

- How to tell
- The door used to slow down before it met the frame, and now it bangs. The bang grew worse bit by bit, not all at once. Oil often shows on the floor, or below the arm on top of a framed door.

- The oil inside a door closer is what slows the door. Once it leaks out, no setting brings that control back. We fit a new closer rated for your door and set how fast it closes.

- How to tell
- The door has banged shut since it was fitted, or since someone adjusted the closer. There is no oil on the floor. The door still closes all the way, only far too quickly.
- What we do
- This needs setting, not a new part. We set the closing speed so the door slows well before the frame. Then we test it from fully open.

- How to tell
- The door swings shut at a gentle pace, then snaps closed just before the frame. The bang comes only in that last short part of the swing.

- A door closer has a second setting for the end of the swing. We ease that setting until the door meets the frame softly and still closes fully.

Is a glass door that bangs shut bad for the glass?
Over time, yes. Every bang sends a shock into the panel and the fittings that hold it. Toughened glass is strong, but it is weakest at its edges and corners. A door that closes gently spares both the glass and its fittings.
If the door is slowed down, will it still close and latch?
It should, when the speed and the final latch are set together. A closer turned down too far can leave the door resting just short of the frame. So we set both, then test the door from fully open and from halfway.
Can people keep using a glass door that slams until the repair?
Usually, with care. Guide the door shut by hand instead of letting it swing. Keep small children away from the closing edge. If you see a chip or a crack in the glass, stop using the door.
