The short answer
A glass door that shakes usually has a worn hinge, or fixings that have eased behind it. On a frameless door, the glass may have loosened in its corner fittings. New hinges or a careful reset usually hold the same glass firmly again. If the glass has slipped in a fitting, stop using the door until it is fixed.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
A hinge has worn and lost its grip
- How to tell
- The door moves at the hinge when it opens, with a knock or a click. The rubber pad inside the hinge may have worn away, so the glass sits loosely.
- What we do
- We support the door, remove the old hinges and fit a new pair to the same holes. New gaskets, the rubber pads between metal and glass, let the hinges grip firmly again.

- How to tell
- The hinge plate itself moves against the wall or the fixed panel. You may see a thin gap open behind the hinge as the door swings.
- What we do
- If the hinges are still sound, we tighten and reset their fixings instead of fitting new ones. Then we level the door and check that it swings firmly.

- How to tell
- Patch fittings are the metal plates that grip a frameless door at its corners. When they ease, the door rocks slightly and no longer hangs square.
- What we do
- We set the door square and grip the glass firmly in its fittings again. A pivot is the pin the door turns on. If one has worn oval, setting will not hold, and we price a new one first.
Glass Door AlignmentFrom ₹2,070See this fixThe door is worn at the top as well as the bottom
- How to tell
- The top of the door knocks as it swings, and the bottom also shifts. This is common on heavy doors at busy entrances.
- What we do
- A full door repair visit works through the top pivot, the corner fittings and the closer setting together. We renew the rubber in every fitting we open. A part that has worn out is shown to you before it is changed.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Watch the hinges or corner fittings while someone else opens the door slowly, and see which part moves.
- Look at each hinge where it grips the glass for a gap, rust or a worn rubber pad.
- Listen at the top of the door for a knock as it starts to swing.
- Look at the wall or fixed panel around each hinge for screws that stand out.
If the glass has slipped in a fitting, or the door drops as it moves, stop using it. Keep people clear of the door until it has been made secure.

Can a loose glass door fall out of its fittings?
It can, if a fitting lets go of the glass or pulls away from the wall. That is why a shaking door is worth fixing early. Glass slipping in its grip, or a fitting pulling out, means you should stop using the door now.
Does a door that shakes mean the glass is too thin?
Rarely. The glass does not wear or loosen with use. The movement comes from the hinges, pivots and fittings that hold it. When those grip properly, the same glass stands firm again.
Should the screws on a wobbly hinge be tightened by hand?
It is safer not to. A glass door is heavy, and it needs supporting while its hinges are reset. The rubber gasket in each hinge also has to sit right, or the metal can crack the glass. We support the door, check the gaskets and then tighten.
