The short answer
A loose glass door handle usually has a bolt that has eased, or a rubber washer squashed flat. We refit it with new washers, firm but not forced. A snapped, rusted or stripped handle is replaced to fit the holes in your glass. Both are usually done in one visit.

- The handle wobbles or turns in your hand, but nothing is broken. The thin rubber ring between the handle and the glass may be flat, split or missing.
- What we do
- We take the handle off, fit fresh rubber washers and fix it firm. We do not force it tight. A handle clamped hard on glass can crack it at the hole.

- How to tell
- The handle has snapped at its base, or it spins and will not grip. On shower doors and in damp places, rust may show where the grip meets its fixing.

- How to tell
- The wall behind the door has a mark or a dent at handle height. The handle came loose again soon after it was last fixed.
- What we do
- We fit a stopper, a steel dome with a rubber cap, on the floor or wall. It is drilled and anchored, so the door stops before the handle reaches the wall.

- How to tell
- Many frameless doors lock with a patch lock, a lock box fixed to a corner of the glass. If that box moves on the glass, or the key has turned stiff, the lock is the problem.
- What we do
- We fit a new patch lock into the same cutout, with fresh gaskets. Gaskets are the rubber pads between metal and glass. Then we line up the bolt so the key turns easily.

What you can check first

- Look closely at the glass around each handle hole for a chip or a fine crack.
- See whether the thin rubber ring between the handle and the glass is flat or missing.
- Look at the wall behind the open door for a mark where the handle lands.
- Check whether the part that moves is the handle or the lock box on the corner.
If a crack runs out from a handle hole, stop using the door. Keep people clear of it until it is replaced. A crack in toughened glass can turn into a full break with no warning.

Is it safe to tighten a loose glass door handle myself?
It is better not to. The bolt has to be firm, with a rubber washer between the metal and the glass. Without the washer, or tightened too hard, the glass can crack at the hole. Fixed too gently, the handle soon works loose again.
Can a different style of handle fit the old holes in the glass?
Often, as long as it matches the size and spacing of the holes. The holes cannot move, because toughened glass can only be drilled before it is toughened. We confirm what fits before anything is ordered.
Why does the handle on our busy entrance keep coming loose?
