The short answer
A sliding door usually jumps its track because a guide has come loose or gone missing. A broken roller or a bent length of track are the other usual causes. The door is refitted and the cause fixed, usually in one visit. Until then, do not try to lift it back yourself.

- Guides are the small parts at the top and bottom that keep the door upright in its track. When one goes, the door swings or leans as you push it. You may find a broken plastic piece in the track.
- What we do
- We refit the door and fit or reset its guides. We also reset the end stoppers, which stop the door at each end. A new guide is priced on its own line.

- How to tell
- Rollers are the small wheels under the door that carry its weight. One bottom corner now sits lower than the other. You may have heard a crack or a thump just before the door came out.
- What we do
- We fit a matched pair of new rollers, rated for the weight of your door. On a glass door that hangs from a top track, we change the hangers that hold the rollers.

- How to tell
- The door comes out at the same place every time. You can see a dent or a bend in the track there. It often follows something heavy being dropped on the track.
- What we do
- A gentle bend is eased back and filed smooth. A sharp crease cannot be made straight again, so we replace that short length.

- Leave the door where it rests, and look at it without pushing or lifting it.
- Look at the top edge to see whether the door is still held in its top track.
- Look along the bottom track for a dent, a bend or broken bits of a roller or guide.
- Take photos of both ends of the door and the spot where it came out.
- If it has jumped before, think back to whether it was at the same spot each time.
Stop using the door and keep children and pets away from it. Do not try to lift it back into the track. A glass, aluminium or uPVC door is heavier than it looks. It can fall once it leaves the track.

Is my home secure if the balcony slider has come out of its track?
Usually not. A door that is out of its track cannot sit in its lock. Treat that door as open until it is refitted. Keep the room closed off if you can.
Someone put my sliding door back, so why did it come off again?
Putting the door back does not fix the reason it came out. The loose guide, the broken roller or the dent is still there. The door rides out at the same weak point again. We find that part and fix it, so the door stays in.
Could the glass be damaged after the door came off?
It can be, even if nothing looks broken. Look at the corners and edges for chips from a safe distance. A chip on the edge of toughened glass can make it break later without warning. We look at the glass while the door is out and tell you if it needs replacing.
