The short answer
A shower door usually sags because its hinges have worn in the steam. On a sliding door, worn rollers cause the same drop. Once a door drops, it can scrape the floor and its strips stop sealing. We change the worn parts on the glass you have, and set the door level again.

- A hinge is the metal fitting the glass door turns on. The door swings less freely, clicks at one point, then drops a little. Its bottom corner may start to brush the floor or the next panel.
- What we do
- We fit a new pair of bathroom hinges that are stainless inside. Every glass face gets a fresh gasket, the rubber pad between hinge and glass. Then we hang the door and set it level.

- How to tell
- You see rust or brown streaks around the screw heads on the tiles. The whole hinge may shift a little as the door opens. That means the fixing in the wall has weakened, not only the hinge.
- What we do
- We cut out rusted screws rather than force them, so the tiles do not crack. We set fresh anchors with sealant, then fit the new hinges.

- How to tell
- Rollers are the small wheels at the top that a sliding door hangs from. When one wears flat, that end of the door sits lower. The door drags, and the gap under the rail is no longer even.
- What we do
- We fit new rollers and set their height so the door hangs straight. We clean the rail they run on, and refit the blocks that stop the door lifting off.

- How to tell
- A door that drops drags its bottom strip over the floor. The strip tears or bends, and water starts to escape after a shower. Levelling the door alone will not stop that leak.
- What we do
- Once the door hangs level, we fit new strips cut to the door. A straight strip only seals a door that is straight, so we level the door first.

What you can check first

- Shut the door and compare the gap along the closing edge, top and bottom.
- Open the door slowly and feel for a click or a small drop part way.
- Look for rust or brown streaks around the hinge screws on the wall.
- On a sliding door, look along the top to see if one end hangs lower.
- Look at the bottom strip for tears or a bent edge where it drags.
Stop using the door if its glass now touches the tiles or the floor. Stop too if a hinge moves in the wall when the door opens. A door that drops further can chip at a corner. A chipped corner is where toughened glass, the safety glass in showers, tends to break.

Can I lift a sagging shower door back into place myself?
We do not advise it. Lifting a wet glass door puts its weight on the worn hinge at an awkward angle. A slip in a wet bathroom is a real risk too. Leave the door gently shut and send us a photo of the hinges.
Why has the shower door in a fairly new bathroom already dropped?
Shower hinges sit in steam and splashed water every day. A hinge that is only chrome on the outside can rust inside quite early. Hard water also dries into scale on the moving parts. The grade of the hinge matters more than the age of the bathroom.
My shower door dropped suddenly overnight. Is that different from slow sagging?
Usually, yes. A sudden drop often means a fixing has given way, not slow wear. A screw may have rusted through, or the glass may have slipped inside a hinge. Keep the door shut and do not use it until it is checked.
Is it worth fixing a sagging shower door, or should I change the whole enclosure?
Fixing it is usually enough. The glass keeps its shape, and the hinges or rollers that carry it are what wear. New parts fit the holes and fittings already on your door. Change the enclosure only if the glass is damaged or you want a new look.
