A shower door that will not close usually has worn hinges. Many shower hinges swing the door shut by themselves, and that part wears in the steam. The next cause is a magnetic strip that no longer holds the door. A loose handle that catches the next panel can also stop it shutting.

- A hinge is the metal fitting that joins the door to the wall or panel. Many shower hinges bring the door back to closed on their own. When they wear, the door stops short or drifts open again.

- How to tell
- A magnetic strip is a pair of plastic strips with magnets inside, on the closing edges. A good one shuts the door with a soft click. When the plastic hardens, the two halves no longer meet and the door drifts open.

- We replace both halves of the magnetic strip together, cut to your door. The door then clicks shut and stays shut.

- How to tell
- The door meets a soft resistance just before it shuts, then bounces back. A bottom sweep, the strip along the lower edge, may have torn or slipped. You may see it bent or out of line.

- How to tell
- The handle turns or rocks when you pull it. As the door swings shut, the handle knocks the fixed panel or the wall. Or it moves so much that you cannot pull the door fully closed.

- Push the door gently shut and listen for the soft click of a magnetic strip.

My shower door closes by itself from wide open but not from halfway. Why?
The spring inside the hinges has weakened. It still has enough pull when the door starts far out. Near the end of the swing, that pull is too weak to finish the job. A new pair of hinges brings the full swing back.
Should a glass shower door swing shut by itself or stay where I leave it?
It depends on the hinge. Some shower hinges hold the door wherever you leave it. Others pull it back to closed. A photo of your hinge tells us which kind you have and what it should do.
Can cleaning the magnets make my shower door click shut again?
Only if soap or scale is the problem. Wipe the strip gently with a neutral bathroom cleaner and try again. If the plastic has turned stiff or yellow, the halves will not meet flat. Then the strip needs replacing.
