The short answer
A sliding shower door usually sticks because its rollers, the small wheels it hangs from, have worn. Soap and hard water scale on the rail make them skid instead of turning. A torn strip catching on the glass can also jam the door. Most stuck doors are put right in one visit.

- The door drags, squeals or moves in jerks. You need two hands where one finger used to be enough. A white crust may show on the rail, the metal bar the wheels run along.
- What we do
- We fit new rollers with sealed stainless bearings. We clean the rail back to bare metal first, because scale wears new wheels out quickly.

- How to tell
- The door hangs at an angle, or one wheel has lifted clear of the rail. It may have jumped when someone pulled hard. The small blocks that should stop this may be broken or missing.
- What we do
- We hang the door back on new rollers and refit the anti-jump blocks. These are small stops above the wheels that keep the door on the rail.

- How to tell
- The top slides, but the bottom of the door sticks or swings out. You may see grit, hair or scale packed in the channel at the floor.

- How to tell
- The door moves freely until one point, then catches with a rubbing sound. A strip along an edge may be torn, bent or hanging loose. The door may also leak at that spot.
- What we do
- We take off the damaged strip and fit a new one cut to size. The door then passes the fixed panel without catching.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Slide the door slowly and listen for a squeal or a grind at the top.
- Look along the top rail for a white or brown crust.
- Check from the front that the door hangs level and both top wheels sit on the rail.
- Look in the bottom channel for grit, hair or scale packed in.
- Watch the edges as the door moves, to see whether a strip folds or catches.
If the door has come off its rail, do not try to lift it back on. Leave it as it is and stop using the shower until it is refitted. A heavy glass door that falls in a wet bathroom can break and hurt someone.

Will cleaning the top rail free a stuck sliding shower door?
Sometimes, for a short while. Wiping off loose soap film can help a door that has only just started to drag. If the bearings inside the wheels are already stiff, a clean rail will not free them. Avoid strong acid cleaners on the rail, because they harden the strips nearby.
Should I spray oil on the wheels of my sliding shower door?
We do not advise it. Oil holds soap and grit, so the crust builds up faster. It also runs onto the glass and the floor, which makes a bathroom slippery. A worn wheel needs replacing, and oil only hides that for a while.
Why does my shower slider stick only near one end of its travel?
That end of the door is usually sitting lower. A worn wheel drops the door there. Skidding wheels can also wear grooves into the rail at that point. A strip may also press harder there than elsewhere. We check the full length of the rail on the visit.
Does a sliding shower door rail have to be changed along with the wheels?
Usually not. We clean it and smooth out any grooves the old wheels have worn. If the rail is too damaged to reuse, we tell you before any new part goes on.
