The short answer
A shower door handle usually comes loose because the rubber washers under it have flattened. The bolt through the glass can also rust until the handle snaps. We fit a new stainless handle through the same holes, usually in one visit. If the glass around the hole has cracked, the panel has to be replaced.

- Washers are the rubber rings between the handle and the glass. When they flatten, the handle rocks or turns as you pull it. There is no rust and no crack, only movement.
- What we do
- We take the old handle off and clean scale out of the holes. The new stainless handle goes on with fresh washers on both sides, tightened snug and no further.

- How to tell
- Rust or brown stains show around the handle, and it may mark your hand. A rusted stem can snap on an ordinary pull. A knob may already have come away in your hand.
- What we do
- We remove the old fitting, cutting the bolt if it has rusted solid. The glass is protected while we work. The door stays on its hinges throughout.

- How to tell
- A thin crack runs out from the handle hole, or a chip shows at its edge. This can follow months of a rocking handle, or a handle tightened too hard. The handle may feel loose because the glass under it has broken.
- What we do
- A cracked hole cannot be mended. Toughened glass, the safety glass in showers, cannot be drilled again. We make the door safe and fit a new panel made to size. The handle then goes onto the new glass.

What you can check first

- Hold the handle lightly and see whether it rocks, turns or slides.
- Without pressing on it, look for a crack or chip around the handle.
- Look at the handle stem and bolt for rust or brown marks.
- Check both halves of the handle, inside and outside the shower.
- Take a close photo of the handle and the glass around it.
Stop using the door if you see a crack or chip at the handle hole. Leave the door closed and keep children away from it until it is checked. Glass that has cracked at a hole can break when the door moves.

Can I tighten a loose shower door handle with a screwdriver?
We do not advise it. The bolt passes through a hole in toughened glass. If the washers have flattened, tightening presses metal against the glass. That pressure is how cracks start at the hole.
Why did only the inside half of my shower handle come loose?
The two halves are bolted to each other through the glass. The inside half takes more water, steam and cleaner, so its fixing tends to wear first. The outside half soon follows. Both halves come as a set, so we change them together.
Is a loose handle a sign that something else on the door is wearing?
Sometimes. A handle is often pulled harder when the door has dropped and no longer shuts easily. So we look at the hinges and the strips while we change the handle. If they are fine, we tell you that.
