The short answer
Window glass comes loose when the strips that hold it in the frame crack or fall off. Shrunk rubber around the glass can also leave it free to move. We set the glass back on fresh rubber and fit new strips. If the glass is chipped or cracked, we replace it. Where glass has broken, we usually make it safe the same day.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 3 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
A strip that holds the glass has fallen off
- How to tell
- A length of thin plastic or aluminium strip is lying on the sill or the floor. The glass moves or clicks on that side. Plastic strips on the sunny side of a building usually crack first.
- What we do
- We support the glass, clear the channel it sits in, and bed it on fresh rubber. Then we fit new strips matched to your frame, so the glass is clamped all round.
Loose Window Glass RepairFrom ₹935 / windowSee this fixThe rubber around the glass has shrunk away
- How to tell
- The strips are all in place, but the glass still moves. The rubber has pulled back from the corners, or pieces of it have dropped out.
- What we do
- We lift the shutter out and lay it flat, which is safer for the glass. We fit new rubber all round, sized to your glass and frame. Then we check that the pane sits firm.
Aluminium Window Rubber ReplacementFrom ₹723 / windowSee this fixThe loose glass has chipped or cracked
- How to tell
- Loose glass knocks against the metal frame each time it moves. Look for a chip or a short crack along an edge you can see. A damaged edge is where glass breaks.
- What we do
- We take out the damaged glass and make the opening safe. We fit new glass made to the size we measure, to match what you have. Worn rubber and strips are renewed at the same time.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Look along the inside edges of the frame for a strip that is missing, cracked or loose.
- Look at the rubber around the glass for gaps, or pieces that have fallen out.
- Check the sill and the floor inside for pieces of strip or rubber.
- Look at the glass edges for a chip or a short crack, without touching them.
- Take photos from inside the room, and do not lean out to see the outside.
Stop using this window now. Do not open or slide that shutter, and keep people away from the glass. Do not push the glass back in, tape it from outside or reach out of the window. Loose glass at height can fall, so have it seen to without delay.

How do I keep a loose pane safe until someone comes?
Keep that shutter closed and still. Keep children away from the window, and move anything that could knock the glass. Do not tape it or wedge anything against the pane. Pressure on loose glass is what pushes it out.
Can my old glass go back in, or will I need new glass?
Usually the old glass goes back in, if it has no chip or crack. We look at every edge while the glass is out. If an edge is damaged, we tell you and replace the glass. A damaged edge can break later.
Why do the strips around my window glass keep falling off?
Plastic strips go brittle in strong sun, then crack and drop off in lengths. Aluminium strips work loose when their clips or screws corrode. When one strip goes, the others are usually not far behind. After looking, we tell you whether one side or all four need renewing.
