The short answer
Traffic noise usually gets in through the gaps around a window more than through the glass. The common gaps are an open joint around the frame, flat seals and shrunken rubber around the glass. Sealing them makes the room quieter, but single glass will still let sound through. For real quiet, we also fit double-glazed windows.

- How to tell
- The noise seems to come from the edge of the window, not the middle of the glass. You may see a dark slot where the frame meets the wall. Dust and small insects often use the same gap.
- What we do
- We clean the joint out and fill deep gaps with a foam cord. We then seal it inside and outside, closing the path the sound was taking.

- How to tell
- The shutter is the part of the window that slides or opens. Traffic sounds loudest at its edges, where the seals, the rubber or brush strips, look flat. It may rattle when a heavy vehicle passes.
- What we do
- We fit new seals sized to the gap, so the shutter closes against something soft. We then check that the lock pulls it firmly onto the new seals.

- How to tell
- Glazing rubber, the rubber strip that grips the glass, keeps an aluminium pane firm. Once it shrinks, the pane buzzes when a bus or truck goes past. That buzz adds to the sound from the road.
- What we do
- We replace the rubber all round the pane with a profile that suits your glass. The firm pane stops buzzing, and the small gaps at its corners close.

- How to tell
- Noise is loudest at the upright line where the two shutters meet. That line, the interlock, should hook tight when the window is shut. If you feel air there, sound is getting through too.
- What we do
- We set the shutter height so the interlock closes fully, and renew flat brush strips. The same work also cuts the dust and draughts along that line.

What you can check first

- With the window shut, put your ear near the frame edge and then near the glass, and compare.
- Listen for a buzz from the pane when a heavy vehicle goes past.
- Look for a dark line where the frame meets the wall.
- Press the locked shutter lightly as a vehicle passes and notice whether the noise drops.

Will sealing my windows stop all the traffic noise?
No. Sealing closes the gaps, and the gaps are usually the loudest path. Sound still passes through a single pane of glass. The room becomes quieter, not silent.
How does a double-glazed window help with road noise?
It has two panes of glass with a sealed space between them. Less sound passes through that than through one pane. We supply and fit double-glazed aluminium and uPVC windows as new windows. It is the step to take when sealing alone is not quiet enough.
Should I seal the gaps first or go straight to double glazing?
It depends on how loud the road is. Sealing is the smaller job, and you hear the difference at once. If the room is still too loud, a double-glazed window is the next step. A new window needs a sealed joint too, so the sealing is not wasted.
