The short answer
A window handle that will not turn is often caused by a shutter that has dropped. The lock bolts then press on the frame, and the handle cannot move them. A worn handle or a jammed lock gear are the other usual causes. Forcing it snaps the handle, so stop and have the window checked.

- How to tell
- The handle stops hard partway, even though the shutter sits square. A uPVC handle works a multi-point lock, a set of bolts around the frame. When its gear jams, the handle cannot finish its turn.
- What we do
- We remove the handle and work the gear directly first. A worn handle is replaced with the right spindle, the square pin that drives the gear. A seized gear is priced as its own part before we go on.

- How to tell
- The handle feels stiff even with the window open. Or it moves freely when open, but fights you as the shutter closes. The second one points to the keeper, the part the latch hooks into.
- What we do
- We fit a new handle where the old one has worn inside. Where the keeper is out of line, we set it so the latch catches easily. Setting the keeper is part of the fitting.

- How to tell
- The handle turns easily while the window is open, but jams once it is shut. You may have to lift or press the shutter before the handle will move.
- What we do
- We set the shutter square on its hinges or rollers and adjust the keepers. Once the bolts meet their keepers, the old handle often turns freely again. Then you pay for the adjustment, not for a handle you did not need.

- How to tell
- The uPVC window slides, and it has become heavy to move. The handle grew stiff at around the same time. The bolts now reach the frame at an angle.
- What we do
- We fit new rollers, the small wheels under the shutter, made for your window system. Then we set the shutter height. With the shutter level, the handle usually turns without force again.

What you can check first

- If the window is open, turn the handle gently, because an easy turn there points to the shutter.
- Do not force the handle, because a forced handle can snap its spindle.
- Look for a gap or a line of light at one corner of the closed shutter.

Should I spray oil into a window handle that will not turn?
No. Oil does not help when the shutter is pressing on the bolts, which is the usual reason. It also gathers dust inside the gear. Leave the handle as it is and have the alignment checked.
My window is shut and the handle will not turn. How do I open it?
Do not try to pull the shutter open against the lock. Leave it closed, which is the safe way for it to stay for now. We free the handle and the gear on the visit, and then find why it jammed.
Why did the handle jam a few months after the window was fitted?
A heavy new shutter can settle a little after it is fitted. If it drops even slightly, the bolts start to rub on the keepers. This is usually an adjustment, not a faulty part.
Is a jammed handle on an aluminium window the same problem?
Often it is not. Many aluminium sliding windows have a simple latch, not a multi-point lock. So a stiff aluminium handle is usually the latch or its keeper. On a uPVC window, the position of the shutter is the first thing we check.
