The short answer
A sliding window that screeches, grinds or knocks as it moves usually has worn rollers. A dirty or dented track makes a rough scraping sound instead. If the glass clatters as the shutter moves, the rubber holding it has usually shrunk. Each sound points to a different repair.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
Worn rollers screech or knock under an aluminium shutter
- How to tell
- Rollers are the small wheels under the shutter. A high screech means one has stopped turning and is skidding. A soft knock that repeats as you slide means one has worn flat on one side.
- What we do
- We fit a new pair of rollers sized to the shutter. We clean the track first, so old grit does not wear the new pair. The window then slides quietly.

- How to tell
- A uPVC slider with tired rollers makes a low rumble as it moves. You may also hear the interlock scrape as it closes. The interlock is the edge where the two shutters meet.
- What we do
- We fit rollers matched to your uPVC window system and set the shutter height. At the right height, the interlock meets without scraping.

- How to tell
- A gritty crunch along the whole track points to packed dirt. A scrape along one side points to worn guides, the parts that keep the shutter straight. A click at the same spot is often a dent in the track.
- What we do
- One repair visit covers the track, the guides and the alignment. We clean the track, smooth a rough spot and reset the guides. Many noisy windows need no new part at all.

- How to tell
- The noise comes from the glass, not from the track. It buzzes or clatters as the shutter moves or meets the frame. The rubber at the corners of the glass may show gaps.
- What we do
- We fit new glazing rubber, the strip that holds the glass firm, all round the pane. The glass then sits still while the shutter moves.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Slide the shutter slowly and listen for where the sound comes from: underneath, the side or the glass.
- Notice whether the sound repeats evenly along the track or happens at one spot.
- Look at the rubber around the glass for gaps, cracks or missing pieces.
- Vacuum loose grit out of the track, then slide the shutter again and listen.
- Do not spray oil on the rollers or the track to quieten them.

Chat on WhatsAppA photo or a video is enough to startCommon questions
Is a noisy sliding window a sign that a part is failing?
Often, yes, when the noise is a screech or a grind. A roller that has stopped turning scrapes the track on every slide. Left alone, it wears the track too, which costs more to put right.
Why did my sliding window get noisy after the rains?
Rain water that sits in the track can rust steel rollers. Wet dust also packs into the track and dries hard. We clear the drain holes in the track during a roller job, so water can run out.
Can a recording of the noise help you find the fault?
Yes, a short video with sound helps a lot. A screech, a knock and a clatter each point to a different part. We still check the window on the visit before we change anything.
