The short answer
A uPVC window that will not close properly has usually dropped on its hinges or rollers. A worn handle, worn rollers or flattened seals can also stop it closing tight. Most are put right on the frame you have. We set the shutter and change only the part that has worn.
Why it happens
Usually one of these 4 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.
The shutter has dropped out of line
- How to tell
- The shutter touches the frame before it is fully shut. You may need to lift it or push hard to close it. The gaps around the closed shutter look uneven.
- What we do
- We watch how the shutter meets the frame, then set its hinges or rollers square. We adjust the keepers, the parts the lock bolts go into, so every bolt lands. Often no new part is needed.

- How to tell
- The shutter reaches the frame, but turning the handle does not pull it tight. The handle may feel loose, or turn further than it used to.
- What we do
- We test the lock gear before we change anything. A worn handle is replaced with one that matches your window. If the gear itself has failed, we show you and price it first.

- How to tell
- This happens on sliding uPVC windows. The shutter meets the frame at one end but not at the other. Dust or noise comes in at that open corner.
- What we do
- We fit rollers made for your uPVC system, then set their height. The shutter sits level again and closes evenly against its seals.

- How to tell
- The seals are the rubber strips the shutter closes against. When they flatten, the window shuts and locks but does not feel tight. You can rattle the closed shutter, or dust collects along its edge.
- What we do
- We strip out the old seals and fit new ones matched to the groove and the gap. Then we adjust the keepers so the window closes firmly without force.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Look at the gaps around the closed shutter, and see whether they are even all round.
- Close the window slowly and notice where it first touches the frame.
- Check whether light shows at one corner when the window is shut and locked.
- Look along the rubber seals for lengths that are flat, cracked or hard.
- Close it with your hand on the frame, never pressing on the glass.

Can a uPVC frame bend and stop the window closing?
It can happen, but it is not the usual cause. Most often the shutter has dropped, or a roller, handle or seal has worn. We check the moving parts first. If the frame itself is damaged, we tell you plainly.
Why does my uPVC window close well in the morning but not in the afternoon?
uPVC grows slightly in heat. A shutter that already sits a little low starts to rub once the frame warms up. Setting the shutter square usually makes it close the same all day.
Will pushing a uPVC window shut harder damage it?
Yes, over time. Pushing a dropped shutter shut drags the bolts across their keepers and wears them. It also strains the lock gear, which costs more to replace than a handle. Close it gently until it has been set.
Is an old uPVC window worth repairing instead of replacing?
Usually, yes. The parts that wear on a uPVC window are separate parts. Rollers, handles, lock gears and seals can each be changed. Replacing the whole window makes sense only when the frame itself is damaged.
