The short answer

A cold draught from a closed window usually comes through the middle of a sliding window. That is where the two shutters, the moving parts, overlap. Flat seals and an open joint around the frame let cold air in too. Most windows are sealed against draughts in one visit.

Air strongest where two sliding shutters overlap points to their meeting seals or lock. Air beside the wall points to the outer frame joint. A broad pane chill is heat transfer, which sealing cannot remove.

  1. The shutters no longer lock together in the middle

    How to tell
    The interlock is the upright line where two sliding shutters overlap and hook together. If a shutter has dropped, the hooks stop gripping. You feel a thin, cold stream along that line.

    We raise the dropped shutter until the hooks grip from top to bottom. We also renew flat brush strips, then feel around the window again for any draught.

  2. The seals along the edges have gone flat

    How to tell
    Seals are the rubber or brush strips between the shutter and the frame. Once flat, they let a cold draught along the sides and bottom. A locked shutter that you can rattle is another sign.
    What we do
    We pull out the tired strips and fit a new set matched to the gap. The shutter then closes against something soft, with no draught past it.

  3. Cold air comes in around the frame itself

    How to tell
    You feel the draught where the frame meets the wall, not at the shutter. It is often worst behind the curtain or along the top edge. Dust may collect along the same line.
    What we do
    We clear out the old filling, fill deep gaps with a foam cord and seal the joint. We seal the inside and the outside, because each face stops a different leak.

  4. The glass itself is cold, even with every gap sealed

    How to tell
    You feel no moving air at the edges, but the room is cold near the window. The glass feels much colder than the wall beside it. It is a single pane.
    What we do
    A single pane lets the cold pass straight through it. We replace the window with a double glazed one, which has two panes and a sealed air gap between them. The gap slows the cold, and the new seals close the edges.

  5. The shutters no longer meet the frame anywhere

    How to tell
    New seals were fitted, and the draught is still there. The shutters are twisted or the frame has bowed, so a gap runs the full height of the window. This is common on old wooden and light aluminium windows.
    What we do
    A seal cannot fill a gap that changes along its length. We replace the window with a new uPVC sliding window. Its shutters close onto seals on every edge, in a frame fixed level and square.

  • On a cool, windy evening, move the back of your hand slowly around the closed window.
  • Hold your hand close to the upright line where the two shutters meet, from top to bottom.
  • Lift the curtain and feel along the edge where the frame meets the wall.
  • Push gently on the locked shutter to see whether it moves or rattles.

Common questions

Is the cold coming through the glass or through a gap?

Glass on a cold night feels cold to touch, but it does not blow. If you feel air moving on your hand, that is a gap. Sealing stops the moving air. It does not change how cold the glass itself feels.

Why does the curtain move when the window is shut?

Air is coming in past the window. Even a thin gap lets enough through to stir a light curtain. Closing that gap usually stops it. If the curtain still moves afterwards, the air may be coming from a door or a vent.

Can I still open the window for fresh air after it is sealed?

Yes. The work closes the gaps, not the opening. The window slides and locks as it did before. It just stops letting cold air in while it is shut.
