The short answer
A cold draught from a closed window usually comes through the middle of a sliding window. That is where the two shutters, the moving parts, overlap. Flat seals and an open joint around the frame let cold air in too. Most windows are sealed against draughts in one visit.

The shutters no longer lock together in the middle
- How to tell
- The interlock is the upright line where two sliding shutters overlap and hook together. If a shutter has dropped, the hooks stop gripping. You feel a thin, cold stream along that line.
- What we do
- We raise the dropped shutter until the hooks grip from top to bottom. We also renew flat brush strips, then feel around the window again for any draught.

- How to tell
- Seals are the rubber or brush strips between the shutter and the frame. Once flat, they let a cold draught along the sides and bottom. A locked shutter that you can rattle is another sign.
- What we do
- We pull out the tired strips and fit a new set matched to the gap. The shutter then closes against something soft, with no draught past it.

- How to tell
- You feel the draught where the frame meets the wall, not at the shutter. It is often worst behind the curtain or along the top edge. Dust may collect along the same line.
- What we do
- We clear out the old filling, fill deep gaps with a foam cord and seal the joint. We seal the inside and the outside, because each face stops a different leak.

- On a cool, windy evening, move the back of your hand slowly around the closed window.
- Hold your hand close to the upright line where the two shutters meet, from top to bottom.
- Lift the curtain and feel along the edge where the frame meets the wall.
- Push gently on the locked shutter to see whether it moves or rattles.

Is the cold coming through the glass or through a gap?
Glass on a cold night feels cold to touch, but it does not blow. If you feel air moving on your hand, that is a gap. Sealing stops the moving air. It does not change how cold the glass itself feels.
Why does the curtain move when the window is shut?
Air is coming in past the window. Even a thin gap lets enough through to stir a light curtain. Closing that gap usually stops it. If the curtain still moves afterwards, the air may be coming from a door or a vent.
Can I still open the window for fresh air after it is sealed?
Yes. The work closes the gaps, not the opening. The window slides and locks as it did before. It just stops letting cold air in while it is shut.
