A squeaking glass door usually has a hinge or pivot that has run dry. A grinding sound means the door has sunk and now rubs on something. Bangs and rattles come from the closer, a loose handle or worn rubber strips. Each of these is usually fixed in a single visit.

- A high squeak comes from the side the door turns on, as it swings. On a frameless door, that part is a pivot, the pin it rotates on.
- What we do
- We find the dry fitting by listening, then clean it and grease it correctly. Do not spray household oil on it before we come. Thin oil strips out the grease that is left, so the squeak returns louder.

- How to tell
- A grinding or scraping sound comes from low down, or from the edge beside a fixed panel. You may find a fresh scratch on the floor where the door passes.
- What we do
- We set the door square on its own fittings, so it clears the floor and the panel. It is worth doing soon, because a corner that keeps grinding can chip.

- How to tell
- The door lands with a bang every time it shuts. On a frameless door, oil may show around the floor spring, the closer sunk into the floor.
- What we do

- How to tell
- A creak or a click comes from a hinge, and it returns soon after greasing. This is common on cabin and shower doors, which hang on hinges. The door may also sit a little low on the handle side.
- What we do
- We fit a new pair of hinges to the holes already in the glass. Each one gets a new gasket, the rubber pad that sits between the metal and the glass.

- How to tell
- The door rattles or taps when you push or pull it by the handle. The handle shifts a little on the glass as you hold it.
- What we do
- We take the handle off, fit new rubber washers and fix it firmly, without over-tightening. A handle with a stripped thread or a cracked base is replaced.

- How to tell
- Each close ends with a sharp knock of glass meeting glass or metal. The clear strip along the edge looks yellow and cracked, or has fallen away in pieces.

- Open the door slowly and note where the sound comes from.
- Look along the floor under the door for a new scratch or a shiny worn line.
- Look at the clear strip on the closing edge and see whether it is soft, hard or missing.
- Hold the handle lightly and see whether it moves on the glass.

Which glass door noises can wait, and which need fixing soon?
A squeak from a dry fitting is annoying, but it does no harm for now. A grind, a scrape or glass knocking on glass is different. Those wear the edge of the door with every swing. A damaged edge is where toughened glass can break. Have those ones fixed soon.
Can one visit deal with two different noises on the same door?
Usually, yes. Many doors make two sounds at once, such as a dry pivot and a hard rubber strip. We listen before we touch anything, then deal with each part in turn. Any part that needs replacing is priced before we fit it.
Does a noisy glass door mean the glass itself is damaged?
Rarely. The sounds come from the metal fittings and the rubber, not from the panel. The one to watch is grinding at a corner, because it wears away the glass edge. We look at the edges for chips on the visit.
