The short answer
A door handle hits the wall when nothing stops the door first. Usually there is no stopper, or the old one has slid or sits in the wrong place. On a glass door, a worn closer can also let the door swing too far. A stopper in the right spot ends the knocks, and a damaged handle is refitted or replaced.

There is no stopper where the door lands

- The handle marks the wall at the same spot each time. Nothing on the floor or the wall stops the door before that.
- What we do
- A stopper is a short steel stop, padded with rubber, fixed where the door lands. We open the door to its natural limit, mark that spot and anchor the stopper there.

- How to tell
- A stopper is there, but it has moved, worn flat or sits too near the hinge side. The handle still reaches the wall past it.
- What we do
- We refix it in the outer part of the swing, bolted down instead of glued. A stopper too near the hinges levers against the door and strains its fittings.

- How to tell
- A light push or a breeze sends the door wide open. It does not stay where you leave it. On a frameless door, the closer is a floor spring hidden under the door.
- What we do
- We fit a new closer suited to the door's weight, and set how it moves. Many floor springs can also hold a door at a set angle, which limits its swing.

- The handle wobbles, or its finish is chipped on the side that meets the wall.
- What we do
- We refit a loose handle with new rubber washers, or replace a damaged one. Without a stopper as well, the new handle takes the same knocks.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- Open the door slowly and see how far it travels before anything stops it.
- If there is a stopper, see whether it has moved or its rubber has worn flat.
- Notice whether the door hits the wall on its own in a breeze, or only when pushed hard.
- Look at the glass edge nearest the wall, and around the handle holes, for chips.
If the glass has a chip or crack near the handle or edge, stop using the door. Repeated knocks weaken toughened glass at exactly those spots.

Will a rubber pad stuck on the wall stop the handle hitting it?
It softens the knock for a while, but stuck-on pads tend to come away. The door still swings as far as the wall, and the glass still takes a jolt. A stopper drilled into the floor or wall stops the door before the handle arrives.
Who fixes the dent the handle has made in the wall?
Filling and painting the wall is not work we do. A painter or a building repair team can do it. It is worth fitting the stopper first, so the repaired patch is not marked again.
Can the door be held open without touching the wall?
Often, yes. Some stoppers have a catch that holds the door open. Many floor springs can also be set to hold the door at a chosen angle. We look at your door and floor and suggest the one that suits.
