The short answer
A cracked glass door is not safe to use, because damaged toughened glass can break without further warning. Cracks often start from an older knock, or from a handle fitted too tight. We usually make the door safe the same day. The new panel is made to size, and we look at what caused the crack.

- A crack runs across the glass, or a piece has chipped out of an edge. A chip counts too, because it takes away the strength of toughened glass.
- What we do
- We usually make the door safe the same day and take the broken glass away. The new panel is then made to size, with holes for your fittings.

- How to tell
- The crack starts at the edge or corner that swings towards the wall. The wall or the handle shows marks from earlier knocks.
- What we do
- Once the new panel is in, we fit a stopper where the door lands. A stopper is a rubber-faced stop, anchored to the floor or wall. Without one, the new glass takes the same knocks.

- How to tell
- The crack starts at a handle hole and runs outwards from it. The handle may have had no rubber washer, or it was tightened hard against the glass.
- What we do
- On the new panel, the handle goes on with fresh rubber washers, firm but not forced. A handle that is bent, rusted or cracked is replaced, priced on its own line.

- How to tell
- The damage is on an edge where two doors meet, or where a door meets a fixed panel. The rubber strip on that edge is hard, cracked or gone.
- What we do
- We fit new rubber along the edges that meet, so glass closes against rubber instead of glass. It cushions every close.

- How to tell
- The crack starts near a hinge, or at a corner where the door had dropped and rubbed. The hinge may be rusted, or the rubber pad inside it has worn away.
- What we do
- We fit new hinges with new gaskets, the rubber pads that stop metal pressing on glass. The new panel then hangs level and swings clear of the floor.

What you can check first

- From a safe distance, take a clear photo of the whole door and of where the crack starts.
- Without touching it, see if the crack starts at a hole, a hinge, a corner or an edge.
- Look at the wall behind the door for marks where the door or its handle has been hitting.
- On a pair of doors, look at whether the rubber strip on the meeting edges is still there.
Stop using a cracked glass door now, and keep everyone away from it. Do not press on the glass or try to take it out yourself. Damaged toughened glass can break into pieces at any moment.

Why did my glass door crack when nobody was near it?
Often it had been damaged earlier. A small chip from an old knock takes away the strength that toughening gives. The panel can then break later, on an ordinary close or with no clear reason. That first knock may have happened long before.
Can a crack in a glass door be sealed instead of replacing the glass?
No. A cracked toughened panel cannot be made strong again, and glue or tape does not change that. You also cannot cut or drill toughened glass once it is made. So the door needs a new panel made to size.
Can the old handle, hinges and lock go onto the new glass?
Usually, if they are sound. We transfer them to the new panel and line them up again. A worn or rusted part is priced on its own line before we change it.
What happens to the doorway while the new glass is being made?
We take out the damaged glass on the first visit and cover or screen the opening. That keeps the space secure and usable in the meantime. The new panel is fitted on a later visit, once it is ready.
